Can you request and Induction?

Just wondering if anyone speaking to a consultant has had their wishes for an induction taken into account?

And, do you think I would even need to request one? Have been on consultancy care having growth scans; 30 week scan was fine but baby has shot up at my 34 week scan, and also apparently have polyhydramnios.

They have sent me for a fasting glucose test, but I know these are not as accurate. I did have a GTT at 20 something weeks and results came back clear but apparently borderline.

I'm pretty sure based on that, the huge baby (head measuring on 97th percentile Confused ) and the excess waters that I will have GD, and unfortunately because results were clear I have been eating carbs a lot and drinking fruit juice as I really crave it, so had it been being monitored I'm sure they would class it as poorly controlled.

Due to all this I really do not feel comfortable going beyond 39 weeks at the latest. I don't have another consultant appointment until 38 weeks and I feel really in the dark, I had a normal pregnancy last time so have no idea what they do for GD; I know the guidelines have now changed to allow women to go to 40+6, but is that only for well controlled diabetes with normal growth scans?

I'm really panicking and feel like I've put my baby at risk so feel pretty shit too, I just want someone to explain my options to me and take on board my concerns based on the frantic googling I've been doing that it's not safe to go to 40 weeks :(

Thanks so much @midnightflowers and @HopelesslyHopeful87 :)

That's really interesting about GD coming back negative and still having poly and a large baby, I think I will stress that even if GD comes back clear that if baby is still growing at the current rate and waters are still deep at my 38 week scan that I want an induction ASAP!

Will update with how the appt goes :)

I am in a similar position, I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with polyhydramnios and also baby is measuring on the 95th percentile at last scan. I have another scan at 36 weeks and my consultant has said if fluids are still high I will be induced at 38 weeks, if the fluids have returned to normal I will still be in induced just before due date and they will not let me go past due date. Also I have to have a dr present in labour due to risk of shoulder dysplasia. I have been tested twice for GD which were negative but having to monitor blood sugars at home for the rest of pregnancy just incase.

I was induced with no.3 during the week early due to few health issues.

Part of me is happy I was induced as baby was 9lbs 2 early, I found it the toughest labour as I don’t think he was quite ready to come.

Although it took 2 pessary’s after the 2nd was inserted I had contractions every 1-2 minutes until baby popped out. Both our heart rates shot up, I was put on a drip with 6 bags and was pretty unpleasant experience. I still managed on gas & air though last 2 hours.

Think I possibly expected it to go quicker and easier than my 2nd induction as that went well, but she was 2 weeks overdue.

I think it will be different for everyone and everyone will experience induction differently.

Good luck op 😊

@user1499122304 that's really interesting, you do sound in a really similar position to me! Thing is my mum is diabetic so has a blood sugar testing kit; got her to test mine a couple of times yesterday and it looks like my blood sugar is normal, so may also just be baby. I'm glad to hear they are still planning on inducing you (if that's what you want, that is!)

@asongforlovers thank you Halo sorry to hear your last induction didn't go as well as you hoped; it is really reassuring to hear lots of experiences though as I've never been induced before or know anyone who has so am trying to prepare myself mentally

I think it felt worse than it was at the time. When I look back it was still pretty quick when it got going. I just expected it to be quicker.

I managed to remain pain free until last few hours then on G&A. I did ask for other pain relief and epidural but midwife talked me out it as she thought I was coping.

My 2nd induction went great, first pessary inserted just after noon and contractions started not long after, sent to labour ward and she arrived 40 minutes later.

Everyone is different.

My friend got membrane sweep at 37 weeks as baby was going to be big and that was enough to send her into labour that evening.

I would definitely speak to your midwife/consultant and tell them how your feeling though.

Not be long and you will be meeting your baby, so exciting.

Thanks lovers :)

Just an update if anyone is reading or will find useful, I'm actually a bit lost now as my blood test result came back perfectly clear, no diabetes, and no more appointments have been made for me.

I'm getting really anxious in these last few weeks, am not seeing a consultant (and it sounds like a routine appointment anyway as it was booked months ago) until nearly 38 weeks and don't have another growth scan until 38 + 3. I don't know who to vent my worries to now and have read the guidelines which apparently don't support induction of babies just for being large. It looks like I will just have to deal with whatever happens naturally :(
