What do I do about telling new job I'm pregnant?

So I started a new job on Monday. Two days a week. Mon and wed. Trouble is I'm 7 weeks pregnant. I wasn't pregnant when I was offered the job 2 months ago. Things took so long to process due to the nature of the job and the checks that had to be made. I've been so looking forward to starting then I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks before I started.

I was going to wait until after the 12 weeks scan to say anything as if something goes wrong then I wouldn't have to explain it to people I don't know well etc. And they'd maybe be less inclined to let me go if I can do a good job in that time. Though my probation is 6 months so they will have to know before then, so could find an excuse to just get rid of me Sad

Trouble is i've been hit with horrendous morning sickness that is getting worse with each day. I'm even waking in the night feeling sick and spent all day today throwing up.

I just don't know what to do! Do I have to just tell work why I'm running to the loo to throw up on my second day and that I won't be around in 8 months time (all being well), or do I try my best to cover it up and power through until the 12 week scan. It's only 2 days a week after all.

Advice welcome and appreciated.

Poor you to be in that situation. Are you happy to be pregnant? What's your job doing?

Yes, happy to be pregnant. We wanted another one. Just the timing is terrible! Job is admin. So sitting down at desk etc. Not physically taxing. Just feel so anxious about it all on top of this horrendous sickness. Wasn't this bad with my first.

Try your best not to say anything until just after your 12 week scan for the reasons you outlined above.

Make sure that when you do tell them, you can supply them all the dates (when you found out and when you were offered the position and then began working etc).

Also go and visit your Doctor and lay it on really thick that you are finding the morning sickness really difficult to cope with. Tell them you’ve tried all the advice on the NHS website (if you have, or check it out and try some of it if you haven’t already), and hopefully they’ll give you anti-sickness pills.

I managed to get the pills, and they really helped me with the sickness. They didn’t completely get rid of it, but reduced it significantly. The only problem is that they made me incredibly drowsy, and I had to constantly drink and keep busy to avoid falling asleep. If you’re working though, that shouldn’t be too much of a problem as you’ll obviously be very busy.

Thanks @argeles I'm phoning the docs in the morning to try and get a telephone appointment to ask for something.i know thryre unlikely to get rid of all sickness but I need to get to a level where I can function. Tried everything suggested online on every site. Nothing is touching it. The only thing that gives me slight relief are ritz crackers and sucking mints! Neither for long unfortunately.

Check with your doctor if you can take Avomine tablets. You can get them over the counter. My doctor suggested them when my sickness was bad and they helped a bit.

Personally I would tell them ASAP if it's impacting on your ability to do a good job. Once they know you have a level of protection. If they don't know and they dismiss you because they perceive you to be a bit flakey and they don't understand why (completely understandable, early pregnancy is hideous!) there isn't really much you can do. If they know then it's a bit more tricky for them.

I would just be honest with them, they will appreciate it more. 2 months is a long time between being offered a job & starting, if you are honest they will understand xx good luck xx

Look at the NICE guidelines when talking about anti sickness meds. S someone who sugcera from HG they'll probably start you on cyclizine at first if they offer you anything but they don't always help and they can make you really drowzy. Ondansetron is the strongest so if you need to go back at any point because the tablets aren't working then that's what I'd suggest you try and get but they can be a pain to get hold of as they're expensive. Good luck.
