Telling your boss

How soon was you when you told your boss you was pregnant? How soon did you tell HR? What about the rest of your team or work friends?

I told my supervisor and manager as soon as I found out with my previous pregnancy as I was rushed to hospital for tests, etc and had appointments for early scan as the GP suspected an early miscarriage.. which was correct. HR was not informed.

As I'm hoping this pregnancy is more successful and runs smoothly, I now don't know how soon to inform work of pregnancy. I'm only 4 weeks at the minute so understand it is super early but I'm so new to all this I've no idea what I'm doing haha. I was thinking of telling supervisor next week but I don't know when to tell HR? I guess work friends will be put off as long as possible depending on morning sickness.

It's entirely up to you. I told HR at five weeks because I was really ill and my boss isn't great. Having to tell boss soon. Would rather wait and tell everyone after 12wks ideally.

I had to tell my boss before I'd told my mum as was meant to be doing radioactive work and obv couldn't!! I was in a state of shock (and a bit teary) and he couldn't have been nicer! iWork in science so have to let people know so slightly different!

I’m a nanny so only one boss really. I told her about 7 weeks mainly because the children all had worms and i was unable to take the tablet she had kindly got for me! I had planned to tell her that week but ended up having to tell her over the phone. It’s definitely been easier that she knew earlier

Thank you. I think with my job I could wait until I'm just about showing depending on symptoms. I'm thinking of telling my supervisor as she was really supportive last time and then leaving hr until I have my first scan date but I wasn't sure what the procedure is or preferred timescale etc

I told my boss and supervisor yesterday - I am 14 weeks. I waited till my 12 week scan and after I told me family. I also wanted to wait until after the 12 week scan when NT and blood test results where ok.

Luckily I was not very sick in the early stages so I did not have to tell them before then.

Yes - I would wait until you are comfortable and have had all the necessary scans and blood tests.

Good luck :)

I told my boss at 7 weeks when I returned from previous mat leave following a loss. Combination of needing support, work requirements (scientist) and a lot of morning sickness. Boss was super supportive. Formally told HR when I received my mat b form (22 weeks), although boss and I had already discussed mat leave and plans etc at 12-15 weeks.

laelti · 03/10/2017 16:50

I'm 22 weeks... and technically haven't told my boss, as she went on sick leave the day after my 12 week scan when I'd been planning on telling her!
2 other managers do know, and have done risk assessments etc, but my team still doesn't know (I've been lucky with not being sick/not really showing/wearing unflattering uniform anyway!).

The benefit of telling them is they have a duty of care/can do risk assessments etc. If you know your supervisor was supportive last time it might be good to tell them for that? But as far as I understand them you don't have to formally tell anyone until 25 weeks when you need to get leave applications and so on sorted.

I think I told boss and work at 12 weeks; first pregnancy, and I wanted to broadcast it all over FB, but had some colleagues on FB, so I took the blasé route of telling the world. Can totally understand why people wouldn't necessarily do it that way.

SurfingKitten · 03/10/2017 17:05

With pregnancy one, I think around eight weeks. Second pregnancy probably closer to 20 weeks.

Sharl2017 · 03/10/2017 17:06

Maybe I might wait until my scan then for officially telling HR & Manager. May tell my supervisor after I've spoken to the GP next week depending what he suggests but if he's no concerns I guess she can wait until 12 week scan too!

It's all so scary and exciting!!!

My boss knew at 7 weeks as I'd had 3 miscarriages. She was fab. I told HR informally at around 9 weeks but not officially until last week.

NC1990 · 03/10/2017 20:26

I told my boss at 16 weeks, luckily I had no sickness so didn't feel I needed to say any earlier. My boss is the HR Manager so killed two birds with one stone!

Bobbiepin · 03/10/2017 20:45

Told my manager the weekend I found out because she's also a very good friend and I knew I would need someone keeping an eye out for me. She also had the key to some locked, unused toilets close to my classroom that made morning sickness slightly more bearable. Told HR about 7 weeks as I needed time off for my booking appointment. They were great and helped out a lot. Once even sent me home to nap for 2 hours!

McTootBlowsOnHisBagpipe · 03/10/2017 21:10

I told my boss at 5 weeks as I'd previously had a miscarriage and she wanted to ensure I was well supported. She's also more like a friend so I wasn't worried about telling her. She reduced my workload and enabled me to work from home one day a week.
Her knowing also made it a bit easier when I was signed off with morning sickness.

HolyShmoly · 03/10/2017 21:12

I am HR! I think i'll tell my boss once I get my booking in appointment as I think he'll be good about it and fairly accommodating if I have to make any adjustments due to symptoms.
Although that might turn into a domino effect as I might have to tell a different director who I indirectly report to, who is married to one of the managers who I know has spilled beans about other stuff before!

Sharl2017 · 03/10/2017 22:02

I'm pleased everyone else seems to just make it up when they tell work too and I've not missed what the general rules are Grin
Booking in appointment sounds a good time to tell managers
