Early pregnancy scan

Hi, I got a BFP in February this year but when I went to the doctors I was rushed to the hospital and after various tests over the next week and a early pregnancy scan they found I had miscarried (most likely before I'd even got to the doctors due to the pain and bleeding I'd had before the bfp) when doing the scan they found I had a large cyst on my ovary which has since been removed in surgery in June.

I now have another BFP and while I'm so excited to have another chance, I'm terrified it's going to be ripped away from me.

How likely is it when I go to the doctors that he'll refer me to the early pregnancy unit?

Is he likely to refer my purely because of what happened last time and because I am anxious?

No, I'm afraid not in the absence of any bleeding or cramping. One miscarriage doesn't increase your risk of another at all and the NHS would simply grind to a halt if it offered reassurance scans to everyone who was anxious. There's not really anything useful that can be picked up on a scan before 6 weeks or so anyway.

Its a long anxious wait I know but if you aren't bleeding or cramping odds are all is fine. If you have bleeding and cramping after 6 weeks you can get referred to EPU; if it happens before that your GP should be able to arrange blood tests to check whether HCG is increasing appropriately.

Thank you Tiramisu I don't want to go to my doctors with high expectations, so thought someone on here might know first. Your answer makes perfect sense.

Good luck with the pregnancy. If you have a bit of spare cash you could consider booking a private scan from 7 weeks onwards for some reassurance. Early miscarriages in your first pregnancy really are so so common and although it's horrible, usually it's just bad luck and everything is fine thereafter.

Hi, sorry about your miscarriage. You won't get sent for a scan just because of an earlier miscarriage without any pain or bleeding. I'm now 17 weeks and did not have any scans before my 12 week dating scan despite having a MMC earlier in the year. I completely understand about the anxiety, it is really hard to deal with. Perhaps consider a private scan if you can.

I think it depends on area. I had an early scan at 8 weeks because of bleeding and cramps without having to push for it. Same last time in a completely different area.

RedBlackberries · 02/10/2017 08:53

Sorry.... the important bit! I know friends that have had free early scans for reasurrence without any bleeding in my old area but where I am now they said not unless you are bleeding. Good luck with the pregnancy!

Sharl2017 Im in a similar boat, I had a MC in July and got a BFP this satudray - its what we wanted but oh my god im SCARED AS HELL and wish i could be reassured by a scan but i called the Midwife unit and they said (like the other ladies mentioned) unless there are any real concerns there is no reason to have an early scan. I suppose you should look at this as a positive as they dont think a MC is any reason to believe it will happen again.

Lets just keep our fingers crossed that the next few weeks fly by and we make it to the 12 weeks scan to see a healthy baby and hear a good heart beat....

Im going to try and keep my feet on the ground with this pregnancy and take each day as it comes ... its horrible that this experience will be tainted with the previous one!

I hope it all works out well for you ... keep this post updated Smile

I had an early scan last week without any untoward symptoms. I had a mmc in March and the EPU said then that they could scan me early if I got pregnant again and to just ask the GP which is what I did. I guess I depends on the area. For me lack of bleeding or pain didn't mean that the pregnancy was continuing as normal so I felt justified in asking for a scan in case I needed surgery again.

I think a private scan at 7 weeks is the way to go. Usually £90 ish, just google for one near you. Don't go earlier than 7 weeks though to avoid not seeing anything and being freaked out unnecessarily.

LJFM2B · 02/10/2017 09:56

Must be something to do with the area!! thats odd isnt it as its all NHS. ... im Kent Darrenth Valley wish they would do early scans!

Sharl2017 · 02/10/2017 11:17

Thank you all so much for your lovely comments (my eyes are welling up stupid horemones 🙈)
To everyone on this scary journey with me - fingers crossed we all get to see healthy babies at our 12 week scans! I'm going to the doctors next week for them to confirm it then see if they offer scan at EPU (and hope I'm in an area that can offer it) if not I'll look into private scans Smile
