Hi

Just after a little advice please. I'm 5 wks pregnant and on weds just gone I took my son to a farm with my husband. There were lambs there but I didn't touch them or come into contact with them or any other animal at the farm. My worry is that the next day I developed flu like sypmtoms but all week even beore I had gone to the farm I had a sore throat which has gradually got worse. My aches and chills have gone the only thing remaining is my sore throat(Which is really bad it hurts to swallow and I can hardly talk). I didn't even know sheep carry toxo until after I got back from farm. Could I have contracted it without coming into conatct with them?
I probably sound really paranoid but my 2 yr old son was born profoundly deaf, with slight brain damage and a twisted bowel so I am very scared about this pregnancy as it is.

Any advice thoughts would be verry welcome

Thank You

Make a GP appointment.
It's really, really unlikely to be toxo but do go, if only for your peace of mind.

Hi Laura,

As far as I'm aware, Most people don't get any symptoms with toxo, some get a fever for no reason, In my opinion, you have a reason as it sounds like a cold. But please see your doctor if you are at all worried as I think there is a blood test for it.

Good Luck

someone was asking about it another day... if you havent touched, its very unlikely you got it. the main one of being infected is cat pee, thats why we need to avoid gardening during pregnancy.

when i had toxo i had big hard nodules spread on my neck, armpits and bikini area. they were quite sore too.

but of course do go to your gp. hopefully is nothing.

'the main way i meant....

I have just looked on Tommys website as they have lots of info about it and pregnancy and have copied this little bit from it

There is no risk from being in a field or pen with lambs and toxoplasmosis cannot be
caught from sheep droppings.

I'm still going to visit the doc and i'm still pretty scared only because of everything my son has been through.

I was tested for toxo in my first pregnancy and tested positive but it was an old infection and I had the anti-bodies - apparently most women are actually immune having had it at some point in their life without realising it.

If it was me though, I would get tested just to make sure.

munchie82 · 09/04/2007 11:11

So they can test to see if you have the infection present or whether it was an old infection?

Also how long did it take for your results to come back?

Went to doc first thing this morning and she said it was highly unlikely that it was toxo but rang the microbiology dept at hosp to ask them and they said that incubation period is normally longer than a day (which is when I felt like I had flu) but they are going to do a blood test anyway just to put my mind at rest. Got a test tomorrow.
