High Amniotic Fluid

First time I've posted one of these (despite reading hundreds of them). Mainly looking for reassurance as like all mums to be and first timers I'm terrified.

I'm taking part in medical research so I get extra scans. I had one last week at 27 weeks, it said my amniotic fluid was a little high, 21.8cm but not off the chart. The researchers didn't seem too concerned but saw my midwife yesterday who said that was high and that I might need to see a consultant. She then proceeded to terrify me with why I might have more fluid suggesting he might not be developing as well as he could. Is this really common and it's put me in a bit of a spin.

I have a family history of big babies and he is already about 2lb9 at 27 weeks. But I've been tested for GD and don't have it and my blood pressure is low.

I had this. And was given a million tests plus a very late amino.

Baby was taken from me immediately at birth and tubes stuck down his nose for tests

Everything turned out fine and he is now a really lovely 8 year old.

Yes, it can be sign of potential issues. But I think in most cases is turns out to just be "one of those things".

I do feel that all the joy was sucked out of the later part of my pregnancy beacause of all the worry. But to honest, I only ever think about this and remember what it was like when I see posts like yours. Other use it's all long since passed and forgotten.

Hopefully it will be just "one of those things" for you too - but probably just as well to get checked out

Good luck Flowers

Thanks for replying and very pleased to hear he's a healthy lovely 8 year old.

It might even just be the thought of intervention which is scary and just feel a little helpless but thanks for sharing your story... Just hoping it is "one of those things".

I had polyhydramnios with my last pregnancy. Miserable third trimester that was with a 49 inch waist. Lots of extra scans but he was physically healthy and still is.

He does have simian lines on both hands but don’t know if that has anything to do with it. Induced labour but birth went well. Take a change of labour clothes if they break your waters because you get soaked and go to hospital immediately if they break naturally in case of cord prolapse.

My waters broke and ended up having a section a couple of weeks before the planned section (planned for other reasons)

Never thought about the link between that and the polyhydroamnios. Duh! But I guess it must be more likely.

Thanks both, I just want to be as informed as possibly and think other ladies experiences' all help... Never would have thought to bring spare clothes.

Pleased to hear your little one was healthy too... As that's my main concern.

I had polyhydramnios too. No one really mentioned it but I spoke to the consultant because I saw it in my notes and Dr Google freaked me out. She said that my baby was measuring very big and that was the probable cause - big baby = more fluid.

Anatomically baby looked fine so she was unconcerned and it was monitored using scheduled growth scans.

Baby was born by c-section at 40 + 5 and weighed a princely 11lb. No issues at all - fed easily, no stomach problems etc. Just big.
