Hi all,

I'm in the process of getting everything sorted for when my little one arrives. I think I've got most of the basics but wondered if there's anything you guys find to be really uselfull, or always find yourself running out of. I'd love to know so I can be as prepared as possible!
Thanks.

Really trivial but.....Nappy sacks. When my youngest sibling was born we ran out once... And we kinda needed them... So I will be making sure I have a massive supply of them because you never know
And wipes obviously. They come in so useful it's crazy. Nothing like panicking when you suddenly realise there's only 1 left in the pack...

Bibs and Muslin clothes you can never have enough for when little one is sick or as they get older dribbling Smile

I second muslins - three times as many as you think you need!! I was really glad I'd bought nursing bras before I gave birth. I needed the bras straight away and I wouldn't have wanted to go out shopping. A bouncy chair, a sleepyhead and a fabric sling. Those were my most important purchases! Oh also multi-gyn compresses from boots for after just in case you're a bit stingy down below!

A million muslins! Scented nappy bags and nappy bins.
A backpack changing bag so you have two hands free.
A sling for the likely event baby wants to be held all the time and not put down.
More clothes than you expect to get through!

What is a multi-gyn press? I'm afraid to google..!

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 27/09/2017 19:35

Multi-gyn I think is the brand name - abbot £10 for a box which has ten compresses in boots. They come in individual sachets - you put them on top of your maternity pad, next to the skin and are wonderfully cooling and soothing on stitches.

May sound a bit flippant but kindle. Wonderful to be able to read while bf (you do have to get into position with everything balanced) without having all the lights on for a night feed. Convinced keeping things dark helped us both back to sleep. Sign up to a john Lewis card for coffee and cake tokens (also very bf friendly). Nice hand cream and soap for you (will be washing hands a lot, I avoid antibacterial at home as have to use it so much at work - health care but ymmv) plus maybe "naice" version for downstairs loo when granny/hv due round. Amazon prime (so everything else will turn up when you realise you need it)! Phone numbers /websites noted already for eg bf support, children's centre, hv, lll etc so you don't need to rummage for them.

Deaddoorpost I'm not sure nappy sacks are recommended anymore due to the suffocation risk

DeadDoorpost · 27/09/2017 19:59

raindance HV came round yesterday and said they were fine, just to be extra careful. We usually kept them far from the cot or moses basket anyway and always in the changing bag and packaging until needed. Totally understand why they'd not be the best though as there's been a really recent case where I am when one got stuck in the pram and the baby died. Wasn't a nice story at all.

Don't forget to get some treats in for you! Favourite biscuits, nice tea or coffee etc - you have earned it Smile

Muslins are real workhorses. Wiping baby's face, protecting your clothes from milky dribbles, emergency blanket (if it's warm), emergency changing mat, sunshade, tuck one in well over moses basket sheet and replace when dribbled on rather than changing billions of sheets, older babies sometimes like to hold them as comforters...the possibilities are endless!
