We're planning to take dd to a farm tomorrow but it's lambing season and I'm pretty sure I can't go near them being pg. I clearly remember the midwife telling me but I can't find any info of that in any of my books.

PelvicfloornomoreChocolate · 05/04/2007 21:14

Think they carry some sort of infection harmful to the pregnancy.

Gobbledigook · 05/04/2007 21:14

Can't you? OH I didn't know that!

MrsBadger · 05/04/2007 21:15

toxo and listeria risk - more here
tbh the ewes are more of a risk than the lambs - you can go near them but don't touch them / cuddle them etc

HopeIGetSomeMegaEggs · 05/04/2007 21:15

country doctor tells you here

PizPizPiz · 05/04/2007 21:16

Hadn't considered stealing one but the rosemary growing in my garden would season it just nicely

PizPizPiz · 05/04/2007 21:21

thanks all. It looks like unless I kiss a ewe on the nose and eat its unborn fetus I'll be ok !
Mumsnetters, you are wonderful !

It's not the lambs it's the ewe's. If they miscarried then they would pose a risk to you as there is something in the miscarriage. More to do with peeps living on farms i think

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 05/04/2007 21:34

I thought it was an infection in the placenta.

TBH avoiding lambing ewes is more highly publisised than eating soft whip ice cream, or proper mozerella that hasn't been cooked, so I was assuming the risks were higher.

I wouldn't do it personally and I think many centres that are in lambing season will have lots of signs up and if you are noticably pregnant I would have thought the staff will probably pull you up on it.

HopeIGetSomeMegaEggs · 05/04/2007 21:37

We went to Fishers Farm 2 years ago when I was 7 months PG with DS4. There were notices everywhere advising PG women to stay away from ewes and lambs. I watched a lamb being born from a distance (stood and watched the poor ewe struggle for ages before the farmer pulled the lamb out - she had all my symapthy). The lamb wasn't breathing so farmer told everyone to stand back as he had to swing it, people near front got splattered with fluid.

"spontaneous abortion" I think it's called from recollections of reading James Herriott.

All farms that do visits warn pregnant women to stay away during lambing - even the Archers does

KristinaM · 05/04/2007 22:00

personally I woulndt risk it. your kids will want to pet teh lambs and then hold your hand etc
