Flu jabs?

LadyRenoir · 20/09/2017 18:14

I am currently 22 weeks in.
I never in my life had a flu jab. I am not one of the people who are against vaccines in general, but I do know a few people who went through the worst flues in their life after being vaccined, plus I can't find any info anywhere about the 'ingredients' of the actual vaccines NHS offers (I know some contain mercury, and if we are not allowed to have it in light bulbs, I can't see how healthy it is to inject it in our bodies!). Obviously the flu season is ahead, and I am on the fence whether I should get a vaccine or not, my midwife was not particularly helpful so could not get more info about it.
Any for/against?

I'm feeling the exact same as you, I've never had it in my life either. My midwife was just adamant I should have it in October.

I know they say it doesn't but I had the flu jab last year for the first time and I was so ill, my midwife offered it me last week (32 weeks) but I said no

I have a flu jab every year as I have a compromised immune system due to Crohn's Disease. I am planning on having one as I have never had any adverse effects from it before. But I spose everyone's body would react differently.

Believe me, you do not want to get flu in pregnancy, you could easily end up hospitalised. I had the had the jab in pregnancy and was fine. This winter is supposed to be really bad for flu. You can look up the product characteristics of this year's vaccine online

I've had the flu jab every year for 7 years because of my RA. Last year I started having the pneumonia jab too. Both my GP and the nurse have told me that getting flu after having the jab is a coincidence. I've never had any trouble. Worth it in my opinion

Ohb0llocks · 20/09/2017 19:34

I’m having it this weekend. DS will have it when they send for him too.

The NHS flu page above is pretty good for info.

This second link has some stuff about vaccine ingredients.

You can't get flu from the adult flu jab as there isn't any live virus in it. I'm 22 weeks pregnant too and I'm hoping to get my flu jab done next week. I've had flu a couple of times in my life and really don't want it again, especially not while pg.

If you want to know ingredients etc you'll have to ask the GP surgery for the vaccine insert

kathrynelizabeth3005 · 20/09/2017 19:59

I had the flu jab last year when I was around 14 weeks pregnant. No issues at all aside from a bit of a sore arm for about a day.

Flu is absolutely awful and miserable. I've only had it once in my life aged 19 and definitely wouldn't want it whilst pregnant.

If I'm ever pregnant again, I'll be first in line for the flu jab for sure.

confusedat23 · 20/09/2017 20:25

I have the Flu Jab yearly OP as i have a compromised immune system and have never ever felt ill or gotten ill after having it done.

Flu is pregnancy is meant to be hellish in pregnancy in particular!

Lozmatoz · 20/09/2017 20:28

I've had it in both previous pregnancies and been fine. Planning on having it again this time.

Have you ever had flu? I don't mean a bad cold that people say is the flu, but 'I can't barely get out of bed to go to the loo flu'. It is utterly hideous. Flu jab well worth it!

bananaramama · 21/09/2017 14:36

argh I'm debating the exact same thing, I am currently 20 weeks. I have had the flu jab twice before and each time was horridly ill that year. All the times I haven't had the jab I've been fine...

katmarie · 21/09/2017 16:03

I lived in the US for a few years and had it every winter there, they gave it out as standard, and everyone got the jab. Never had any ill effects from it. I'll be having it this year as I'm due in january and the thought of having the flu while pregnant sounds utterly miserable!

Lemondrop99 · 21/09/2017 16:10

I'm 38 weeks and my GP sprung the jab on me at my antenatal appointment this week. She was quite insistent that I should agree to have it. Aside from a mildly sore arm, there's been no other effects. I've had it previously (due to asthma) without incident.
