12 week scan

Hey all,

My 12 week scan is a week tomorrow and I'm starting to get myself all nervous. I'm not really sure what to expect from it all. My midwife told me I'll have a scan, a blood test and I'll need to weigh myself.

So does this mean I'm going to go from my scan to then sit and wait in the queue for blood tests to be done? Do I wait at the hospital for all the information to come in and be put together? Or do I go home and wait for my midwife to get in touch with me again?

What happens?

In mine, I was called into a room first where I was weighed, had my urine sample dipped and if I remember correctly asked a few questions. That took less than 2 minutes.

Then I had the scan, the technician doing it was lovely. Explained she would be quiet whilst looking at everything and not to panic, but she was quick to show us baby and a heartbeat before continuing with her checks. We had to bring cash to buy scan photos, £3 so maybe take some change incase your hospital is the same.

Then after the scan I waited for 5 mins whilst they wrote up my notes. At which point we were asked to pop around the corner for bloods. There was a blood room in the maternity area.

A quick blood test was done and we were on our way. Probably an hour max if not less in total.

I remember being so worried the day before but it was really reassuring and enjoyable. After a difficult first trimester it marked the start of some of the anxiety easing and me enjoying it more.

I hope that helps, obviously every hospital is different but I imagine yours will be similar.

Hope it goes well X

Hi,

Is your blood test the combined screening one? (Downs/Edwards/Patau). That was what I had - as above was done in a side room from the waiting room, was called in and had bloods taken/weighed myself. Then went back into the waiting room for 5 be mins or so until they called me in to be scanned. All done in the antenatal clinic of my hospital. Didn't need a urine sample but they do dating scans on a full bladder, so drink plenty of water!

I just had to book my 20 week scan on my way out - sonographer stuck a scan report in my notes and the blood results were sent out via post/phone call if high risk.

We had to pay upfront when checking in if we wanted photos - my hospital did take cards but this was all explained on my appointment letter.
May differ depending on what bloods are for/your hospital!

Hope all goes well.

Mine was very similar to pp but they booked my 16 weeks midwife appointment not my 20 week scan. We were given 2 scan pics for free and could have purchased more if we wanted, but will save that for 20 weeks when you can see more.

My 12 week scan was good and straight forward had the scan first which took a while to get measurements as baby kept curling up. A trainee doctor was there also so he had a shot so got to see the baby for ages which was nice and I got 6 photos didn't have to pay for them. Then went back to waiting room to be called for blood tests and check urine. Midwives had all my next appointments for me as well. So overall very positive experience

My scan was done first and it took ages purely because i was so ill and teying not to vomit on the midwife, and baby would play ball to get the measurements (had to do star jumps in the end as that was the only thing that worked). She then was quiet for a bit but talked us through through everything she was looking at and triple checked I didn't have twins or triplets as they run on both sides of the family really strongly.
Once the scan was done she printed them off, got me weighted and measured and passed me over to another nurse who did my blood tests and took the money for the scan pictures. Whole thing took half an hour I believe but was there longer as they were running 25 mins late.
Didn't have any urine samples done that I remember as I was asked to go with an empty bladder and I wouldn't have been able to produce any anyway as I was dehydrated but that day is a blur after the scan (I was incredibly ill the remainder of the day and don't even remember posting to fb even though I've got the proof of it)
