Measuring big at 29 weeks - anyone else? Go on to have normal size baby?

So I measured 34cm on my fundal height at 29 weeks. Had a scan that showed baby wasn't quite as big, but on the 90th centile. GTT was negative (phew).

I'm now 32 weeks, got a repeat scan next week and also now under shared consultant/midwife care.

Has anyone been in same boat, and gone on to have a 'normal' sized baby? I'm terrified baby is going to be huge!! Confused

They measured me as 99th centile with my first and she was 8lb4 when born. I'm 36 weeks with my second now and I'm apparently just over 100th centile. I'm taking no notice, I don't think measuring bump is the most scientific procedure anyway.

Depends what you class as a 'normal' weight. With dd I measured 2 weeks bigger from 26 weeks onwards and she was 6lb5. Ds1 and ds2 I measured bang on at every appointment and they were 8lb5 and 9lb at birth.

The whole way through my pregnancy I measured over the the weight of my baby. Had numerous growth scans and was told I had gestational diabetes. I had my baby 2 weeks early and he was just a petite baby weighing 7lb 4oz. You might just be carrying a lot of fluid. Can not tell you the amount of times I was asked if I was having twins!! X

I measured big all the way through and went on to have an 8 pounds 12 boy. He's been measuring consistently on the 9th percentile since he was about a month (7 months ago) and so is on the light side!

sourpatchkid · 18/09/2017 15:07

Mine measured on 98th percentile and was 9IB 15. It was fine though

holdthewine · 18/09/2017 21:20

My DD measured big at your stage. I was sceptical as no one in either family had had a big baby and DD and her DH are not especially tall or well built. But they were right. First baby, a week early and 9lbs 7oz!

Those measurements are extension unreliable. Even scan measurements are ridiculous.

Scroobius - how on earth can you be over the 100th centile? The 100th centile by definition is the limit... sounds like the midwife doesn't know what she's talking about if she told you that.

I measured ahead in both pregnancies, not massively just 1-2 weeks from whenever they start measuring.

Both babies were under 7lb. Turns out it was mostly cake. Blush

Someone I know was high risk measuring big throughout pregnancy. ... but birth came a week early and baby turned out to be 7.6lbs... not the 9.10 they expected xxx

I did. I went in to have a big baby but the birth was pretty straightforward and he is healthy.

There is a website called evidenced based birth which has some great resources for big babies

Happens all the time. To many people I know, and many people on the internet.
They told me he was huge, all the time, all the way through. 7lbs. A lot of amniotic fluid. It's very common.

TheLuckDragon · 19/09/2017 07:45

Yep, got told he was huge and was having regular growth scans at the end. He arrived a week late weighing 6lb 2oz

HailLapin · 19/09/2017 07:53

I had the tape measure test yesterday at 36 weeks , I'm measuring 3cm "behind".

I had a growth scan a week ago and my baby is estimated as 6lb. For me that's huge as I'm a tiny person.

Hospital have no concerns and sent me on my merry way and asked me to come back at 38 weeks.

I think the tape measure thing is only relevant if you're huge or extremely small.

TheEdgeOfGlory266 · 19/09/2017 08:01

They told me to expect close to 10lbs with DS... he was 7lb15 Hmm

I have a growth scan in a couple of weeks but I won't be taking too much notice.

HailLapin · 19/09/2017 08:01

With fundamental height it's totally dependent on baby's position as well. My baby is curled up and I was told so on a scan , also as I said previously I'm tiny and have a short body. He couldn't uncurl if he tried because of this.

I genuinely just wish they would ditch the tape measure as it says nothing. I've measured "behind" (behind what I don't know) on each of my pregnancies and produced over 7lbs worth of baby with great lungs and healthy organs.

Mum2be2017 · 19/09/2017 08:06

Thanks ladies.

The scan didn't show I had excess fluid, and measurements on the scan put baby on the 90th centile...

It sounds like you're having a bigger than average baby then but that's not something to worry about in itself.

Big babies are easier to handle, easier to dress, tend to do quite well after birth as they can afford to lose a little weight without it affecting them.

My mum had two bigguns (both over 9lb) and they were born naturally. My DH was born naturally at 10lb 8oz, several friends have had babies significantly over 9lb with no complications.

My 11lb-er was an EMCS but that's because my induction dilute to PIH failed. If I could have gone full term I don't think there would have been an issue.

The measurements I'd concentrate on are leg length and head circumference - where are they on those centiles?
