Flying in early pregnancy?? And when to tell of BFP?

I hope someone can give me some advice.

I recently got my BFP but I want to keep it a secret for as long as possible and preferably until week 12. The problem is that I work as cabin crew and I am supposed to stop flying as soon as I get my BFP. I'm only 4 weeks so feel it is just too early to announce. I work for quite a big company and it means that everyone will know. I dont have many flights this month and they are mostly very short. I'm not sure yet about next month. I would have to stop flying by the end of May - or before if my skirt gets too uncomfortable!
Surely only 1 or 2 shortish flights a week for the next couple of months cant generate that much cosmic radiation??

Also, although I'm really desperate to share my news with family I'm not sure I should yet?? I'd love to tell my parents -they're coming down this weekend) and I love to tell dps sisters. Well one of them. The other cant keep a secret at all and would, no joking aside, have spread the word worldwide within hours. And they are very close so cant tell one and not the other. The other problem is that if we tell dps sisters, 'cant keep a secret sister's' children will tell dps son (by his ex) who will tell his mum who will make our life even more difficult than she already does.
And I cant tell my family and not dp's?

Hi there,

I think it is really difficult to know when to say anything. I mostly kept schmum about DS when I was expecting him until about week 13. This time however I was working in a much more close knit unit where everyone knows what everyone was up to. I told people when I was about 6 weeks although a few people guessed before then. I'm really glad I did as everyone is incredibly supportive. I told DP I get looked after better there than at home.

In your job I would say that it is better to be open. Especially as the first 3 months can be some of the hardest. Have any of your colleagues had babies in recent times? What did they do?

I'm not sure about regularly flying, but isn't the cutoff normally 7mths?

We didn't tell anyone until after 12 week scan, risk of m/c decreases, and we could have this nice little secret between us for a few months. Same situation with an exW, I didn't want her knowing before all our friends and family, so didn't tell DH's DD until after them either. As predicted she went straight home and told her DM. She was quiet about it, but her usual cycle is madness every 4mths or so, we've just been through one, so the next should be just after LO arrives. oh joy.

Hello Edie, I think one off flights IYSWIM are fine, but if you do it everyday there is some question over safety.

daisyboohoo · 05/04/2007 08:58

Edie

Theres no concern for occasional flying. Barbados is beautiful. You'll have a fab time. When do you go?

There is a risk during the first trimester of too much exposure to cosmic radiation. I think anything over 1something is considered a risk but most flight crew dont exceed 4 in a 12 month period. But most airlines ground crew as soon as they are pregnant. I'd just like to wait until 12 weeks if I can

Oh right. I bet it is quite exhausting aswell! And what if you get morning sickness

Thanks, we are going 6 May. Never been before, my BIL is getting married!

cazzybabs · 05/04/2007 09:28

Depends on how guilty you would feel if anything were to go wrong! If it where me I wouldn't take the risk - I would rather be grounded. But then i was have been more realxed with the my 1st 2 pregnanies but my mc have made more wary.

I think if it was the middle of summer and I was working 6 long days out of 7 it would be different. But have mostly shortest days possible this month. definately wouldnt fancy any morning sickness in those toilets!! But I'm fine right now and if I do - more likely when I do - I'll rethink. Maybe take a few sickies before I announce.

The days can be really long but tbh they are usually so busy that you dont get tired until you stop. And theres always a chance of a stateside shopping trip next month
