Holiday when 27 weeks pregnant

Carolwithane · 15/09/2017 19:39

I will be 27 weeks pregnant on Tuesday and am flying out to Portugal the same day Confused The pregnancy was unexpected tho very welcome and the holiday was booked before it happened

I'm seeing my midwife on Monday for a fit to fly certificate which won't be an issue as I have been extremely lucky and have been very well throughout

I did initally think of cancelling or defering until next year but as it's a short flight, I've been really well and will be our last holiday just the two of us

Any advice? Words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance Smile

My only advice is to have a great time Smile

There's no reason not to travel as long as your pregnancy is low risk and your midwife is happy.

Have fun Wink

Only advice I have is to take it easy, rest as much as you need to and enjoy!

Feelingstressed444 · 15/09/2017 19:49

I traveled at 28 weeks to Spain for a week and it was the loveliest experience just the two of us 😀 enjoy

Carolwithane · 15/09/2017 19:59

Thanks ladies! Flowers

I've been quiet relaxed about it until this week when I suddenly thought OMG is this a stupid thing to do!

I don't intend to do much except relax and eat! I've advised dp to take his golf shoes so I don't feel guilty napping by the pool Wink

Just take your notes in your hand luggage and make sure you have suitable insurance. Enjoy!

Definitely enjoy every single second baby free xxx very jealous! Never got to have a "babymoon" and really regret it. Although it's obviously lovely to have baby with us now.

Don't forget compression socks for the flight- meant to wear them when flying when pregnant. Can pick them up in boots I think. Enjoy the holiday!

GoodMorning1 · 15/09/2017 20:13

I went to Spain at about the same stage in my pregnancy. We used a holiday insurance company who specialised in insurance pregnancy. Can't remember what you call them. A lot of normal insurers exclude pregnancy from their policies.

Other than that, enjoy it!

Have fun! In my first pregnancy I went to Milan at 26 weeks and Spain for 2 weeks from 30-32 weeks. In my second we went to Portugal at 29-31 weeks. We had a lovely time.

PinkHeart5913 · 15/09/2017 20:16

Make sure you have the appropriate insurance
Take your medical notes

Enjoy yourself!

GoodMorning1 · 15/09/2017 20:39

Aaargh - been searching my emails trying find the insurer we used and I can't find anything. If you google it, there are several companies that offer special insurance.

Have a lovely time.

I'm 29 weeks and currently in Portugal! You need to get signed off by a dr or midwife and have them write a quite specific letter for the airlines (google your airline and ensure the letter uses the wording they require) if you go over 28 weeks on your return journey. We are staying in a very young family/ child friendly resort and there are lots of equally far along pregnant women. Another lady at the resort has had terrible sickness (hypermesis) and the resort has a local doctor they call who has come and given the lady an IV - she was raving about the medical care she has received here.

Carolwithane · 15/09/2017 20:50

Thanks ladies!

I phoned my insurance company who advised I'm covered up to 32 weeks as long as certified by the midwife as fit to fly and have had no complications

I have my compression socks - so attractive Hmm

Just need to iron/pack now Shock

Most health professionals won't use the words fit to fly as it is a medicolegal liability . If your MW does she's very naive. Letter likely to just confirm dates and presence or absence of any complications. Medical insurers specifically say we shouldn't certify people fit to do things.

Sakura03 · 16/09/2017 08:57

Enjoy OP! I went to Turkey at 26 weeks and flew back at 28 weeks and had a fab time, MW happily signed my fit to fly letter. I'm now 31 weeks and was meat to have gone to Denmark for the weekend but because I had reduced movements and went in to get checked out they wouldn't sign my letter despite everything looking good😔 So make the most of it OP😊

Enjoy it! Stay hydrated and relax!

londonfeather · 16/09/2017 09:03

Remember to take your EHIC card with you as well as your notes and travel insurance docs. The EHIC will cover any routine post natal care that many insurance policies won't cover.

Have a good trip!

People do still tend to call them fit to fly letters, but yes, all they confirm is EDD, and if the the pregnancy has been uncomplicated up to that point. Take your antenatal notes with you.

Check with the airline you're flying with what their policy is for pregnant passengers - they're not all the same. Recommendations when flying in pregnancy would be wearing the flight socks, mobilising and keeping well hydrated before, during and after the flight. Take your antenatal notes 😊

Let travel insurers know about the pregnancy, and check exactly what the policy covers you for. And take your notes 😉

I did this exact thing 2 weeks ago, to the algarve (am now 29 weeks).
Without wishing to be a fearmonger, I can say it was a difficult holiday and i hope yours is much more relaxed!
I got terrible food poisoning on the first night from fish at a restaurant (never had it before), on the third day fell over heavily on a cobblef street, and on the penultimate night I developed a serious fever and infection that hospitalised me for a week when I got home!
The only thing I would say is to make sure you know where your nearest medical centre / pharmacy/ doctor is as all of the problems I had were exacerbated by not having this info to hand.
Make sure you have decent travel insurance as my doctor call-out alone cost me €180 which I had to claim back.
Make sure you have ypur EHIC card up to date because it entitles you to free (nhs type) medical cover in the state hospitals, though a lot of treatments require an up-front partial payment in the first instance.

I'm sorry to be the doom-laden voice but I really wish I'd known this before.
That said, I hope you have a great time and enjoy your break before bubba arrives!
Good luck o.p!

Get a seat belt extender Grin ... I thought I'd squeeze into the seatbelt but it was a bit snug and then I couldn't get it open again Shock ... some planes seatbelts are bigger then others!

Take it easy, don't lift too much; I made this mistake on a business trip when i was flying alone and too proud to ask strangers for help putting my baggage in the overhead locker or taking my suitcase off the belt . I woke up next morning in absolute agony!

Our standard insurance covered us as they didn't consider pregnancy to be a "medical condition"

Finally; just gave this tip on another thread about hospital bag; take an extension lead with 4 plug sockets in it. Then you only need one travel adaptor but you will have 4 places to plug in phones, tablets, kindle etc Smile

And relax obviously!
