Hello First time mum due in mid October. What would a newborn sleep in through the winter months we have got a Chico next to me and I have got quite a few sleep suits. I have also got blankets and a couple of swaddles but I have no idea .Anything else that we need to get? Thanks

Grobags Smile

All mine were in them from nearly day one.

Flitter123 · 15/09/2017 14:39

Yep gro bags, so much easier than blankets which get pushed off.

Thank you both @MaisieDotes @Flitter123 so you would put them in a sleep suit then a frontage on top? Roughly how many do you have? X

Both of mine wore a nappy and a babygro.

DS loved being swaddled until he was about 8 weeks then he went into a grobag.

DD however, hated being confined in any sense so she wouldn't tolerate being swaddled or being put in a grobag so she had a large muslin blanket and a cellular blanket over her tucked in at the bottom and sides of the Moses basket/cot until about 3 months.

Then it was a fleece sleepsuit until she could be trusted to stay under a duvet (about 18 months) Hmm

DS1 was a December baby. He started off in a vest (long sleeve on really chilly nights as we couldn't sleep with the heating on), a baby grow / sleepsuit (same thing) and a zip up swaddle thing. Again on really chilly nights I put a thin blanket or muslin over him from the waist down too. Moved him into a Gro Bag at about 10 weeks and thinking followed the table on their website for what tog / what he should wear and the temperature. I had 2 Gro Bags in each tog that we used, as long as you think you have enough to get them washed and dry before you need the next one you'll be fine, they're expensive to have lots of!

Depends on the weather, you get them in different togs. I always used them with a gro egg thermometer so I could use the right tog one. Usually i would use a long sleeve vest, as the gro bags have no arms. The Gro company actually do a chart which tells you what combination of clothing and gro bag to use for whatever the temperature it is.

Grobags are awesome. A lot of supermarkets have them at around £12 which is much cheaper than the branded version, eBay is good as well, if you don't mind pre-owned, we got our summer 0.5 - 1 tog ones from there, much cheaper. Our DD was born in November of last year, she slept in a vest, sleepsuit and a 2 tog grobag through the cold months. We had 3, one on, one in the wash and one for emergencies (poonamis etc). The only thing you have to make sure of is that baby can't wiggle down inside, some say on the label that they are only suitable after a certain weight is reached. Our DD was just over 6lb when she was born so it was a couple of weeks before we could use them.

I found this diagram really helpful when figuring out what to put on them with the sleeping bag.

Just keeping an eye on this thread as I'm in the same position as you loversrock although I'm not due until 13 Nov.

Flitter123 · 15/09/2017 15:14

Also I would say avoid the ones with poppers in the shoulders as they get bigger - they can often 'lever' these open! I much prefer the zip up ones.

Lemondrop99 · 15/09/2017 16:21

Don't forget there's a weight limit on Grobags, so they aren't suitable for small babies. I think it's about 8.8lbs, so not all newborns can go straight into a grobag. I plan to swaddle mine for a while, then into a grobag. There are also Grosnugs which can be used from newborn and are a swaddle/sleep bag combined.

Thank you for asking this! My DS is due 15th Jan and was wondering about this today, funnily enough. Very useful advice everyone.

ItsAMackerel · 15/09/2017 20:14

DS was a January baby and for the first few weeks slept in the Moses basket wearing a babygro and vest but with just a fleece over the top. We do have a warm house though.

When we moved to a cot we changed to gro-bags and stayed in them for the next 2.5 years.

Same due date @sakura03 and interested in the advice here too! There's so much to take in/think about, it's kind of overwhelming!
