Pregnant women are more vulnerable to flu & more likely to develop severe complications from flu

FuzzyOwl · 14/09/2017 16:02

I would go. Pregnancy lowers your immune system and having a newborn often does the same due to lack of sleep etc.

OK fab thanks. My surgery happen to only do the vaccination on the Saturdays I work.. However I'm hopefully changing surgeries next week so will see what theirs is..

I didn't as everyone who I knew who got it done ended up with the flu.

I didn't end up with flu.

Before anyone asks; yes I had whooping cough and yes DD has had her jabs and will continue to do so.

Try Boots, OP - they booked me in as apparently I'm entitled to one on the NHS and it's free through Boots too on that basis.

thingymaboob · 14/09/2017 16:39

I'm front line NHS and am always offered it for free. I have had flu twice (once as a child and once as an adult). I have not had flu for the 10 years that I've been in the NHS. I have never had the flu jab, even after the scare of swine flu. I am pro-immunisations and feel really undecided whether to have it or not.

demirose87 · 14/09/2017 16:47

I haven't had it with this pregnancy as was told by midwife it wasn't the flu season, so I think it depends how far along you are.

Bobbiepin · 14/09/2017 16:55

Put it this way, if you happened to catch the flu and it affected the health of your baby, is the knowledge you could have taken steps to prevent it something you can deal with?

I've always had the flu jab as I'm asthmatic and never had flu whilst I've had the jab. To me its something I need to do to make sure I am healthy enough to care for my child. Its not always effective, but I've done what I can.

FuzzyOwl · 14/09/2017 17:23

I have flu twice but never in the years I have had the vaccinations. I figure at least the vaccination gives you a chance of avoiding it.

FindingNemoandDory · 14/09/2017 20:10

My view is it's worth doing as can cause complications for you and baby - flu jab doesn't guarantee against all strains but will reduce risk!

ChocolateDinosaur · 15/09/2017 07:16

Please don't go to Boots but support your local GP surgery. Your practice has targets to meet for flu to secure much needed funding.

The one year I didn't get the flu jab, I got a horrible flu. Haven't forgotten to get it since. I don't see any reason not to get it if it's being offered, and especially if you're pregnant because babies can't get the jab until 6 months old, if you're having the baby over the winter they will be at risk until then.
