Fed up with feeling sick - any tips?

for the past 2 weeks I have had almost continuous nausea. Worse when I am tired. The only relief I get is when I am being distracted. Sunday night I could barely function. I am used to having low blood suger and a Coke or a bite to eat would sort me out but no matter how much I eat - I still feel rotten. 7+5 weeks pg and hoping this will end sooner rather than later. MiL told me she was sick until my hubby was born! My mum was very sick but it only lasted until the 2nd trimester. Tips and advice please.

Have you tried the sickness bands? I think they do them at Boots.

lots of little and often snacks.
plain food, rich tea biscuits, water, bread etc.

i found fruit a god send.

I found I could keep nothing down and therefore ended up in hospital on a drip. After that i found i could keep liquid down if it was in an ice form..like orange juice lollies..

Apparently dehydration makes you feel dizzy and sick so keep your fluids up...nest of luck and congrats on pgy!

I will be trying the sickness bands but can't wear at work as noone knows yet and I would have to make up a pretty wild explanation.

The dehydration thing makes sense. I am barely peeing at all. I used to drink loads but just can't face it. I shall have to make more of an effort.

I can only eat the strangest things - chicken dippers, chicken and chips from the chippy, bacon and egg baguettes. I may manage a spag bol tonight.

I shall have to buy some rich tea biccies and ginger biscuits aren't working.

keep the tips coming and thank you!

p.s. I think there should be a queasy smiley. :-{

I ended up with hyperemesis and it was awful so I really feel for you guys. I'm nearly 16 weeks and thankfully I have turned a corner although I still have my bad days.

I found that fruit and jelly worked for me, especially since you can choose which flavour of jelly you fancy. Only problem is it takes a while to set! I did go off it after a few weeks though. Bands didn't work for me either.

Hope you feel better soon and that you manage to find what works for you...

Get a packet of rich tea biscuits and put them next to your bed. nibble one slowly in the morning before you get up. This should absorb a bit of the stomach acid which is still in the wrong place as you're not yet upright iyswim. I found that dry breakfast cerial also helped in the morning, and I used to take a little tub of shreddies to work because I couldn't stomach breakfast before I went out. digestive biscuits can also help, any dry biscuit really.

do you like chinese food? When I was pregnant with ds it was one of the few things I could eat in my first trimester that didn't make me feel ill. Chinese does contain a lot of ginger and this can have a settling effect on your stomach, but you can't taste the ginger like you can in ginger biscuits so even though the ginger biscuits might not be helping, the chinese might.

I had three weeks of constant nausea but it now just comes and goes. I found that peppermint tea later in the morning helped. I used to try to drink first thing but would just bring it all up. At the moment, I tend to have some peppermint tea at about 7:45 (I get up at 6:20am for work) on the train and I seem to be okay.

The hardest thing though is that you kind of have to eat in order to make yourself feel a little better (having hunger pains and nausea is a horrid combination) so try really plain, nursery food; jacket potatoes, mash etc.

Good luck!

wannaBeWahteverIWannaBe - the cruelty is that I love chinese food but just can't eat it. Had it Friday night - managed 3 ribs, half my egg fried rice and half my chicken in oyster sauce. I normally scoff it all! Unfair!

Hi - I was like that this pregnancy until I was around 13 weeks so hopefully your sickness will go too. I found that gummy sour/fizzy sweets (like sour cola bottles) really helped but I had to eat them constantly to have an effect.

rowan1971 · 04/04/2007 14:56

There was another thread on this recently, here

(Here's hoping - first time I've tried to post a link.)

Hope you feel better soon.

Gegs73 - just reading your post about cola bottles has made me really want some! I never normally eat sweets (chocolate yes, sweets no)... hmm cola bottles...

gegs73 · 04/04/2007 16:25

Hahah they are rather nice

On 3rd pregnancy I finally figured out what to do. I cut out all sugar for at least 3 months. I couldn't imagine doing this usually as I really need my sugar fix, but honestly it really helped.

Keep hydrated.

Take a vitamin B6 suppliment.

I'm using midget gems but probably any gum type sweet would help, it's obviously a combination of the sugar & fruity flavours. I found ginger ale helped althugh ginger biscuits didn't last time. I've found these little caramelised biscuits which are helping too. I'd like to be really virtuous & do fruit every time I feel sick but I just can't bring myself to do it. Last time I was nauseous 24 hours a day till 24 weeks although I didn't actually throw up very often. This time I'm not feeling anywhere near as bad but I've found out much earlier & maybe it's yet to really kick in Feel for you it is crap. Could you not try the bands & say they're accupressure for tension/allergy/addiction at work.
