If so a) how are your blood test results are you managing to stay totally within range or are you getting daily highs rebounding from lows like I seems to be?

b) having been told by my consultant that the hypos are not damagin to the foetus I have been told by my gp that they are - I am now in a total panic - any thoughts?

do you not have a diabetes support team? They are the people who should know, surely?
And are you getting your high-strength folic acid?

jacksma · 03/04/2007 20:50

Yes, I have fantastic support from my hospital but I just wanted to know how other people with the disease are coping, rather than just hearing statistics. Yes, I am on 5mg of folic acid

I'm hypoglycaemic but control it with diet. I have avoided sweet foods and don't have any sweet drinks. I've had the odd hypo during my first trimester but a recent scan shows that the baby is just fine. I think that as long as it's not a regular event, then baby will be a-okay. Good luck!

I've got type 1! Not pregnant at the mo but have had 2 kids, DS now 3, DD nearly 1.

Hypos are much less of a problem than high blood sugar. My insulin requirements nearly tripled by the 3rd trimester. Was low a lot in the first.

I was told to have very tight control and certainly tp try not to get above 15 as this could affect the baby and cause it to grow v big

Paddyclamp, I have been told to keep my sugars between 5 and 8, did you manage to stop going high in the first trimester - i am having loads of hypos that rebound to send me high - mostly around 13, 14 but a couple of times higher - I am so anxious I can barely think about anything else...

Hi,
I realise this post is relatively old but wanted find out how things are going with you Type 1's?
I am not pregnant yet but we are, ahem, working on it and there are lots of aspects of both being pregnant and the actual birth that scare me to death.
I hope your sugars are settling down more now (are you usually well controlled? I am but am concerned that pregnancy might turn that on it's head)?
Any hints or general info from those who have experienced it would be more than welcome!
Thank you

I'm pregnant, just and type 1. This is my 2nd pregnancy. It's leaping about a bit but I'm getting it right for most of the day atm. Last time I had really bad hypos and I would like to avoid that this time because I don't want ds to wake up to find an ambulance here. I was told that hypos can't damage the foetus only hypers,. However, it was also pointed out that you usually end up hyper after a hypo as a result of eating too much.

General tips - it does get a bit easier to control blood sugars once pregnant as you have more of an incentive than usual. I do a low carb diet and that helps a lot with keeping it more even.
