I'm 17+6 today and last week or so I have been feeling movements. Yaaaay!
Is it normal for movements to be so varied as some days I hardly feel anything?

Yes, many women feel nothing at this stage.

Yup, felt some movements at 16 weeks one night, then nothing for about a week and then a tiny bit of movement/the odd twinge every now and then until now (20 weeks tomorrow) but have had a couple of scans in this time that show baby is wriggling lots but quite far back so not able to feel most of the time.

Thank you.. It makes sense but when your so eager to feel movements you wonder if there's something wrong.

I know the feeling, always a slight anxiety in the back of my mind until I feel another movement or have a midwife appointment and listen to the heartbeat/have a quick scan.

I first felt movements in week 18 and it would be the odd one every other day or so. Over the next week's they became more consistent, and now at 29 weeks he has his own rhythms of awake and asleep (but still has days when he completely doesn't move which is unusual but apparently his rhythm so it's odd).
I also found that it would vary depending on where he's laying as well. As he's been transverse for the last 9 weeks or so I've felt more movements on the right where my placenta is on the front wall, but he's recently shifted and am now feeling them on the left side and further down or in my ribs if he's stretching.

The information I received from my midwife is that regular movements aren't established until around 24 weeks and that is when you should contact them if you have concerns. But don't hesitate to contact them before then if you are worried. I don’t think they will mind at all.
