... please

My doctor is a complete *ss, I told him I was TTC but he said "if you have not reached the date of your period you are not pregnant"

So I had to either take this "not suitable in pregnancy" AB or stay in horrible pain. Now I am terrified.

Please somebody put my mind to rest.

are you definately pregnant?

WideWebWitch · 03/04/2007 15:53

a) you're probably not pregnant
b) if you are it will very likely be ok - they can't say most things are ok in pregnancy because they can't actually test it on pregnant women, for obvious reasons
c) at least it should have got rid of whatever you've got

Any good?

belgo · 03/04/2007 15:55

sorry, posted by mistake. Which antibiotic did you take? I took amoxycillin during pregnancy with no problems.

KezzaG · 03/04/2007 15:55

I was taking some medication and finished the course within days of a positive test. Spoke to my gp and he said not to worry, and that in the first 6 or so weeks the bundle of cells (his words) were self sufficient and it was very unlikely that anything would have passed to the baby.

Im sure you will be ok, I think a lot of things that are a no no in pg are for precaution as much as anything.

justaphase · 03/04/2007 15:59

don't know if I am pregnant yet, not due until 9 Apr

I took Ciprofloxacin for a horendous UTI

Just looked it up on safefetus.com and it says definitely not suitable, can cause all sorts of things. They have tested on animals aparently and extrapolated to humans.

So here I am sitting and hoping I did not get pregnant after all

even if you are pregnant the placenta will not have formed and it is unlikely any medication will affect your baby.

KezzaG · 03/04/2007 16:06

Easier said than done I know, but dont panic. whats done is done and you wont know for sure until 9th.

when did you take the medicine and do you know when you might have concieved? If you are not due until 9th and most people ovulate 14 days before that chances are you have been pg (if you are) from around 26th. does this overlap with your medicine?

belgo · 03/04/2007 16:07

I'm sure this happens all the time, women taking medication before they realise they are pregnant. Try not to worry.

yesireallycan · 03/04/2007 16:11

When I was pg and didn't know it, prob about 6 weeks, I was on a category B antibiotic, I can't remember what, for bad sinusitis (worse pain than I ever experienced in childbirth) and my OB said basically if the fetus gets "damaged" at such an early stage most likely you would miscarry before you even knew you were pg - as above poster says there is no placenta at this stage just a little bundle of cells. I didn't miscarry and everything was fine. Most drugs say not to take in pregnancy to protect the manufacturers from lawsuits, simply because not a lot of research gets done on pregnant women - they are just covering their backs. I do know a friend who was taking a very high grade antifungal and chose to terminate an unplanned and unknown about pregnancy but she was a midwife, did lots of research, and decided that she could not accept the risks. But she WAS pregnant for sure, and it was a different drug.

justaphase · 03/04/2007 16:15

it would be after conception, yes... that's what caused the UTI in the first place

I am worried because most medicines are simply not tested in pregnancy so they do not know but this one looks like it has been and found unsuitable

I am just hoping that the *ss doctor is right and it really was too early to cause any damage

This is what it says on safefetus.com

Causes cartilage lesions of weight-bearing joints of animals exposed in utero.
No well-controlled human data but suggested possible association between use of the drug in the first trimester and congenital malformations including spina bifida, limb defects, hypospadia, inguinal hernia, eye/ear defects, heart and skeleton defects and teeth discoloration.
Reported higher rate of cesarean section for fetal distress in the pregnancies exposed to fluoroquinolones and their babies were heavier.

DD1 poked me in the eye by accident and I ended up in A&E as I was in agony. I had to take eye drops and a few days later I found out I was pregnant with DD2. Went into absolute panic as I found out the eye drops specifically said do not take when pregnant or TTC. Spent most of my pregnancy worrying but DD2 was born - PERFECT.

lemonaid · 03/04/2007 16:24

Given it's very early on then even if you have concieved you wouldn't have been sharing a blood supply yet, so less likely to have any effect than had you taken it a couple of weeks later. And the chances are that you aren't pregnant anyway. My GP happily prescribed a different antibiotic under similar circumstances, though, which does seem the more reassuring approach.

glittercaz · 03/04/2007 16:28

Try not to worry - there must be many women who take all sorts of drugs (prescription and illegal!) and give birth to perfectly healthy babies. I was told for the first 6 weeks (I think it was 6 , may have been even more) the embryo really is a cellular entity - it's not 'sharing' a blood supply with you if that makes sense...if you are pregnant, I'm sure all will be fine. xxx

typhoonsmum · 03/04/2007 16:29

Just want to echo what others have said. If you are pregnant the joing blood supply is not established yet. Embryo may not even have implanted so you will be fine.

shonaspurtle · 03/04/2007 16:35

afaik, the point in the pregnancy when you take these sort of things is very important. Using the thalidomide tragedy as an example, only women who took thalidomide at the point of pregnancy when the limbs were being formed had affected babies.

As pp have said, your possible pregnancy is at such an incredibly early stage that limbs, genitals, heart, teeth etc aren't forming yet so cant be affected by the antibiotic iyswim.

Remember, the fertilised egg doesn't even implant in the womb for about 8 days(?) after conception.

Tatties · 03/04/2007 16:36

I was taking ABs definitely not recommended in pregnancy up to the day I took a test (I was about 5wks pg)
All turned out fine

BetsyBoop · 03/04/2007 16:46

also don't forget it takes around 7 days after conception for thr embryo to implant, before that it is not able to pick up anything in Mum's bloodstream

daisycat01 · 03/04/2007 17:01

if its any help I had a huge bender one night on absinthe and didnt know I was pregant at the time. My son was very healthy and weighed 9lb 10oz!!!

Mrsjaffabiffa · 03/04/2007 18:13

Not related to antibiotics, but again not sutible whilst pg. My best friend had a flu jab the day before she found out she was pregnant. She was scared silly for weeks but all appears fine on her scans, she is 26 weeks now.

Try not to worry.

yesireallycan · 04/04/2007 17:31

Look at that - "no well controlled human data" and "suggested association" - hardly definitive is it?

mummytosteven · 04/04/2007 21:02

I had a dental x-ray, lifted weights, took Citalopram and drank before I found out (not a planned PG!)

babygrand · 04/04/2007 21:11

I got lots of bad headaches in both my pregnancies, and took nurofen despite all the warnings not to.

CarGirl · 04/04/2007 21:11

unplanned preg - lots of drinking etc - she was fine and it very bright!

friend - didn't know she was pregnant had jabs for going on exotic holiday - absolutely fine and again very bright child!

dh - his mum was still taking treatment for TB when she conceived and was pregnant with him he is fine but has natural immunity to TB!
