Can't answer the question I'm afraid, but very interested to see the answers as am in more or less the same position. We have been given a crib by my SIL, but I can only find foam mattresses the right size and I also have the impression they're not so good. Would we be better not to use the crib, but go straight to a bigger cot and buy a decent sprung mattress for it?

We have a cot bed with a sprung mattress - kiddicare.com are probably the cheapest.

thehairybabysmum · 03/04/2007 12:43

we got ours from mothercare...we didnt know what to go for so just bought the dearest (was about £90-£100 if i remember right for cotbed size).

Defo go for sprung, the one we went for also has a zip off top panel with a waterproof bit underneath...we were just saying at the weekend how this is one of those features that we bought without even realising at the time and it has turned out to be excellent.

If DS is ever sick then it just zips off for washing and mattress itself isnt stained or damp.

crib will be useful for first few weeks - we had a moses basket and put it inside cot bed for a while.

thehairybabysmum · 03/04/2007 12:45

JB, we had foam for moses basket and was fine...they are only i this for a few weeks whereas will be in cot for a while, plus they are heavier by then so hence sprung better then.

thats brilliant i have seen the one with the zip off bit about 100 pound thats great thanks so much x

We bought ours from John Lewis in the sale, we also bhatered a bit with the sales guy and got a pocket sprung mattress for about 90 quid. - It was for a cotbed too.

MrsBadger · 03/04/2007 12:45

Jilly, the foam mattressses aren't meant to be great to use for years, but he'll outgrow the crib in a few months anyway so better to spend the money on a sprung mattress for the big cot.

Gingerbear · 03/04/2007 12:47

Nadine - sprung mattresses are £60 on kiddicare.com

LUCIA22 · 03/04/2007 12:55

I am looking to get a mattress for a crib too. Figured that they will only be in it for about 6 months before moving to the cot. Will it be ok to get a foam one do you think and then splash out a bit on the cot one?

MrsBadger · 03/04/2007 12:55

yes absolutely

JillyBaby · 03/04/2007 13:22

That's what I was planning too.
Thanks all.

We went shopping for ours at the weekend in John Lewis. The lady in there said the sprung ones are great for long term use as they last and so are perfect for cotbeds as baby will be in it for a good 4/5 yrs. However, if for a cot she said a foam one is just as good as baby will only use it for a couple of years anyway. The one we got had a removeable cover and a waterproof strip that moves as the baby grows.

We got the Mothercare sprung one with coolmax and removable cover like thehairybabysmum and is prob the best thing we ever bought. Great for the odd toilet training accident or sickie as just zip off, pop in washer and bob's yer uncle! dd is just going into first "proper" bed after 4 1/2 years in cot bed and have ordered same again in bigger size.
