Pregnant straight after miscarriage

Hi everyone!

I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks on 9th July, bled for 5 days then ovulated 5/6 days later (I have a 25-26 day cycle). I believe I'm 8+1 today. Luckily my Dr referred me to my local EPAU for a scan but the nurse refused to scan me saying that I am too early!

I explained everything to her but she was convinced that I was wrong and said that pregnancy cannot be calculated from MC date. She then went on to ask why I got pregnant before having a period and asked if I was told to wait. I'm usually really outspoken but I was so shocked by her attitude that I acted like a blubbering teenager who had just been sent to the headteacher's office haha.

Anywho...my husband and I are considering going for a private scan this weekend. Has anyone else been through something similar?? Oh and I am definately making a formal complaint about the nurse.

Please do complain about the nurse how rude!

Wow, the advice I was given after both miscarriages was to go for it, as while they can't really date it from a miscarriage (as it can screw up your cycle) they can just do a dating scan. The only reason to wait, assuming you feel ready, is for the medical practitioners' convenience, and both the doctor I saw after the first one and the nurse after the second thought that was a stupid reason to wait. As did I, especially as I always knew when I ovulated.
I just realised that I actually had a period between miscarriage #2 and getting pregnant with DS. So I've not had the same experience. But if you're pretty sure of your dates, either go see someone else and push to have your booking appointment sooner rather than later or go for a private scan. 8 week scans are v boring, though. It just looks like a kidney bean. By 12 weeks they look much more baby-like.

That's what annoyed me the most. There are limited risks associated with getting pregnant so soon after a MC. I've just booked a private scan. I would demand one from EPAU but I can't be bothered tbh. I'm very impatient at the moment and honestly, I'm worried 24/7 about having another MC.

Sorry you had to go through that. I had 2 dating scans after getting pregnant straight after a mc. First one put me at only 5 weeks (I must have ovulated about 10 days late) so I was asked to come back at about 7 weeks for a more reliable date when they could see a bit more etc (due date changed again slightly at the 12 week scan). No idea what your nurse was on about. Surely it's more important to date the pregnancy if you've not conceived on a straightforward cycle! Good luck for your private scan x

Massive congrats!!!

How do you know when ovulating after a MC? Do you count 1st day of MC as 1st day of cycle even if it's been brought on by tablets?

I had medical management for MMC on Saturday so just wondering as want to get back on it again. Though have a scan on 19th to check all gone so nervous re doing anything before then

LizzieSiai · 04/09/2017 20:48

coastalchick I chart my daily temperature and always have ovulation pains so . I'm not sure how it would be for medical management but I heard it can take slightly longer for you to ovulate after taking the tablets. Having said that...anything is possible!

You could buy some ovulation test strips to help identify when you're ovulating.

It's totally unacceptable they made you feel that way. It could be worth mentioning if you feel that upset about it, EPAC units are supposed to make you feel supported.
I got pregnant straight after MC and had bleeding and issues with abdominal pain so I had to be hospitalised several times in my first 2 months.
I was given scans after having a positive blood test for HCG and after abdominal pain and bleeding so they wanted to be sure that the baby was still there. I was dated as about a week behind what I thought I would be based on when I had my MC and I just had my 12 week scan that said it was correct so MC can put you ahead or behind a bit of where you think you are.
There is only a certain amount they can do for you in early pregnancy, they can scan you but my EPAC unit would only scan me after 6weeks it's supposed to be the support you would get before what should be a first midwife appointment. If you are thinking you are 8 weeks you should be seeing a midwife around now anyway and you can tell your concerns to her, she may arrange an early scan for you or when your 12 week scan should be.
I appreciate its horrible not knowing so if you can't wait then maybe a private scan might be the best thing for your peace of mind although I really think the EPAC should have scanned you, it's not exactly fulfilling their job description.
Best of luck.

Hi OP. I'm currently 6+4 after miscarrying on 14th July. I also caught straightaway which was intentional as we'd heard it was a very fertile window.
My mw was meant to be referring me for a scan but has been so slow, so we paid £70 and went private at the weekend. Saw the baby with a heartbeat which has made me feel so much better.
Mw was meant to see me today finally but shock horror she canx on me so I'm very glad I just did my own thing.
Unfortunately it happens so often, they're just not bothered. It's such a big thing to us, but nobody ever understands that :(

Congratulations on your pregnancy and if you can afford it I'd say just book the scan for your own piece of mind. Then complain about that vile midwife x

Thanks for all your messages!! Just a little update...

I just received a phone call from the nurse sonographer at the EPAU (just as I was writing a formal complaint letter to the trust) saying that my referral letter just happened to be on her desk with other paperwork and she noticed that I wasn't scanned but really should have been! She was so lovely and apologised for all the hassle.

Having said that, I'm now having to think of a way to leave work early for the appointment on thursday without having to tell my manager why haha. I am still going to send the formal complaint though :)
