Heartburn!! Need advice for relief

Hi all,

Am currently 32+1 weeks with DC2, and the heartburn has been horrendous since around 22 weeks, and getting worse by the day. With my last pregnancy I ended up taking Omeprazole from 36 weeks as I couldn't survive without it. But friends have been making me anxious about the safety of taking meds in pregnancy and I'd love to know if there are any other ways to get relief.

I've given up on Rennie/Tums/Gaviscon as they just do NOT work. Tried almonds, milk, papaya, granny smith apples... but nothing. Am still in constant burning agony and its getting worse by the day.

C'mon- any ideas????? I'm open to trying all suggestions!!

TIA,
Ava50x

Bit of tough love coming here, sorry.

Honestly - go to the GP and get some omeprazole.

The GP is a medical practitioner, trained in what is safe during pregnancy. Your friends aren't. Why would you listen to them over someone with years of medical training?

Heartburn is miserable. Please don't suffer unnecessarily.

Same as PP, if the GP says it's safe then it is. Don't suffer when there are things you can take for it. I'm currently taking ranitidine and it's the first time since January I haven't had daily heart burn, it's a miracle!

I was suffering with bad heartburn and gastritis. GP just gave me Gaviscon and told me I would have to "ride it out". Fast forward three weeks and it's got so bad I end up admitted to hospital on a drip and the Consultant immediately put me on ranitidine which I've been on since.

Honestly, that stuff is a miracle in a teeny tiny pill.... do not suffer! Go to your doctor and get something to help x

My midwife told me that I'd need a prescription from a gp for omeprazole, but if I sent my dh into the chemist there's an over the counter version! She said it's best to do it by the book though, but it's completely safe.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I went to my GP this morning and he refused to prescribe the Omeprazole!! He did prescribe something else, can't remember what its called- but the pharmacy had to order it in because its not a usual thing to prescribe. Lets hope it'll help...

He told me that many over the counter things are taken in too small amounts to make a difference... Hope to get some relief later when the medication arrives!
