Vanishing Twin

Just had an early scan this morning (7 weeks) one healthy baby, very strong heart beat so over the moon about that, but then also a second sac, looks as though it stopped growing at about 4weeks, no heartbeat. Feeling so confused right now, overjoyed at the healthy one but feeling sad at the loss of what could have been. Have been told it will absorb but worried about bleeding. Will this have any impact on the healthy baby? Feeling so anxious about the healthy one now, can't believe we have to wait 5 weeks for our 12 wk scan. Also been told we can't have the harmony test. Looking for some reassurance or anyone with similar experiences I guess :(

Sorry to read this,
If it is a help....I went onto have a healthy baby, full term, natural birth no problems.

Why can't you have a Harmony test? It is not invasive. Does not really make sense to me, what did the doctors say?

@bellanoche that's very good to hear! No complications at all? It just continued like normal single pregnancy?

They said I can't have the harmony test because if the first twin stopped developing due to some kind of problem (which is likely) then the harmony test could be skewed for the healthy baby, eg. We might get a high risk result because it's picking up on that one and not the healthy one.

I had this with my eldest DS. I would never have known if I hadn't had the early scan. He is left-handed though and very often one twin is left-handed.

Aspenn, it's very common apparently but I never heard of it until like you at the 9 week scan I saw that the second sac had no heartbeat. Your emotions will be all over the place for a little while, you are grieving and elated at the same time. Flowers

There is usually no risk to the remaining sac. The second sac for me presumably got absorbed by the placenta because there was no sign of it on the 11w scan and I never passed anything or had bleeding.

Hi Aspen,
Yes, it was a normal pregnancy, two weeks overdue that was all.
Quite a fast labour and nine pounds in weight! No disabilities or other difficulties. I know that all babies are different, but I hope that helps a little.
Rest up you and take care of yourself, it's been a difficult day.
(thanks Aspen and AnUtterIdiot for the info re Harmony)

Thanks everyone, you've made me feel better and slightly less anxious! DH has been nice but he says he doesn't get it, he's not sad as we 'haven't technically lost anything, we went in this morning hoping to see a healthy baby and that's what we got' and he said we need to be happy about the healthy one. The other just wasn't meant to be and he said he doesn't really see it as a baby, I guess he's right but I still feel sad. Considering another scan at 9 weeks to reassure myself about the healthy one, but DH thinks I'm being OTT, should I just try to forget my anxiety and wait until my 12wk scan on 5th Oct? Those who this has happened to- did it effect any other screening tests you had? (Except obv Harmony)

Thanks again

It's quite common and happens early on so most mums never know.
