Insomnia in Pregnancy

Is anyone else struggling to sleep? I'm 13 weeks pregnant and haven't had more than 5-6 hours sleep per night in the past month. I'm fine falling asleep but wake up every day by 5am then can't get back to sleep. So tired all the time 😭

Went to the doctor who said (I quote) "you're probably just worried about the baby". Talk about stating the obvious! Does anyone have any tips on what I can do? Or is this likely to get better now I'm coming into the 2nd trimester?

I'm 13+5 and the same as you.

I fall asleep but wake up around 5am every morning, sometimes I manage to fall asleep again around 6 or 6.30 but then when I wake up for work not long after that again I'm absolutely shattered. I'm pretty fed up of it tbh and don't think I'm stressed out or worried about the baby, so don't think it's that.

Following this thread in case anyone has any tips.

Should hopefully get better in the 2nd trimester (but then worse again in the 3rd). I suffer from insomnia generally which has carried on in this pregnancy but luckily my sickness medicine makes me sleep.

I spoke to the OB about it (before I started the sickness meds) and he said if the insomnia is really making me suffer then medication is worthwhile and his wife had to go on insomnia meds during her last pregnancy.

Your doctor isn't exactly right, it's the increase in hormones during pregnancy that can cause insomnia and shouldn't be dismissed if it's causing suffering.

M the same. The most I sleep is, 45 min before waking with either needing a wee. Horrid dreams or the back pain due to progesterone aparantly which is from centre of back to my head..
Altho saying that last night I slept 3 whole hours before waking up.. And my God do I seem to feel worse for that today lol, I'm so zombie like. I have dsd birthday party to do in a min and visit family.. Yawn is it bed time yet. Lol

I have this too and I'm 24 weeks. I can sometimes have a great sleep and other nights wake up and take hours to get back to sleep. I did get a pregnancy pillow and it helped a lot

I'm the same although I get nowhere near 5-6 hours. I have no problem falling asleep but always waken an hour or so later and am then am up and down all night. It's awful! I'm 29 weeks so still 11ish weeks of this hell to go 😞 I slept fairly well up until 23/24 weeks when the RLS and horrendous back pain kicked in, a maternity pillow does seem to help a little bit though.

Natsku is right it's pregnancy hormones that cause the insomnia. I had it with DD: was tired throughout the day but couldn't sleep at night. In a way it's like your body preparing you for the reduction in the amount of sleep you'll get when baby is born. I had to have naps during my pregnancy as the quality of night time sleep was so poor. I've always needed loads of sleep (I feel fantastic if I go on holiday and sleep 12hrs a night... Well, I did before I became a mum Grin) so it took me about 1 year after DD was born (I kid you not) to get used to the reduced amount of sleep. DD sleeps 7pm-7am (wakes as early as 5.45am when teething) generally and I can't stay up past 11pm or I'm tired come 7am. I fully empathise with you the insomnia was a shit part of being pregnant Flowers I'm not looking forward to it with baby #2 (trying early next year).

Thanks for all the replies - sorry to hear you ladies are suffering too 😴

The thing that's helped me the past couple of days (might just be fluke?) is going to bed earlier. Sounds obvious but it took my mum to suggest that if I'm waking up by 5am every day, I'd be better off going to bed at 9/10pm rather than 11! Not had a solid 7/8 hours by any means but have felt a little better at least. Means that when I wake up early I don't get so annoyed with myself, just get up and start my day. Think my boss is delighted as I'm in work at least an hour early every day!!

Good luck ladies x

I'm 31 weeks & I've been waking up during the early hours for months now. I've taken to listening to audiobooks to help get back to sleep. I have a maternity pillow but still get horrible pain in both hips. It didn't help that DP left for work at 5am and I've been awake since then.
