Really fancy a toasted bagel with peanut butter and jelly. No peanut allergy in family history. Am 8 weeks. Can I have this or not?

I'm not sure but a pregnant woman's food needs MUST be attended to!
Bumping for you!

Nbg · 02/04/2007 18:11

Well they say to avoid it if you have asthma or exczema as it is linked.

Holymoly321 · 02/04/2007 18:13

I have neither, although my dad did have asthma... hmmmm... would one single peanut bagel make all that difference?

I meant peanut butter bagel!

no apparently not

apeainapod · 02/04/2007 18:16

Yes Nbg - completely agree. And the day after I bought my first jar of Sunpat crunchy in a very long time - I found out I was pregnant!!!! And guess what - I have asthma and exzema!!!

Smiling - please enjoy every last little bite!

daisyhun · 02/04/2007 18:21

Go for it - I had huge cravings for peanut butter when PG and it did no harm.

Cravings must be obeyed!

friendlyedjit · 02/04/2007 19:20

only suggested may need to avoid, from what I know, if strong family history of allergy and asthma..
and not contraindicated.......

i'd go ahead and enjoy!!!

sophiewd · 02/04/2007 19:37

if both you and DH allergic then avoid if not don't, I loved my peanust through pregnancy

MerryMarigold · 02/04/2007 19:38

oh no! my son has bad eczema. I had a satay when I was about 12 weeks, covered in yummy peanut sauce...ah me...well, nobody's perfect.

sheepgomeep · 02/04/2007 19:40

If your dp has hayfever as an allergy would I have to stay clear of peanuts as well then?

Starting to feel a bit worried now, as i love peanuts

friendlyedjit · 02/04/2007 19:56

i think its all a bit confusing and that more recent evidence has shown that children with allergies, mostly had mums who had given up peanuts in pregnancy (2/3rds), so there is some question whether giving up peanut in pregnancy may make one's offspring more likely to have allergies?? or whether this was going to happen anyway...

I think the advice is that if mum or dad or other siblings have history of asthma, hayfever or eczema, it may be sensible to avoid peanuts, but it is by no means clear

sophiewd · 02/04/2007 20:15

Think just allergy to peanuts

friendlyedjit · 02/04/2007 20:18

yes sorry should have read that..

Aloha · 02/04/2007 20:20

I would, and did. The official advice in UK is to avoid if history of allergies in family. The US advice is to avoid if you personally are nut allergic (!). Think new evidence suggests it is pretty pointless.

meant should have typed "recent evidence has shown that children with allergies to peanuts"
but I think again the advice seems to be given out in a blanket fashion.. that everyone should avoid peanuts when the evidence is completely inconclusive

but if 2/3rds of women whose offspring have peanut allergy avoided peanuts during pregnancy....there must be more to it then just avoiding peanuts

It may well be whether you ate peanuts or not that this would have happened.

yes that's the advice I think until there's more....
hope you and dc are coping with the allergy, it is a minefield.

Holymoly321 · 02/04/2007 21:57

Well I had half a toasted bagel with peanut butter and jelly - it was yummy but I won't be eating any more!

spudmasher · 02/04/2007 21:59

Mmmmmm. I hope every mouthful was heaven.
What's next then?
Pate on toast?

bristols · 02/04/2007 22:03

I practically lived on peanut butter and chocolate spread on toast () when I was pg. Couldn't help it. All seems to be well so far (DS 7 months old). Hope you enjoyed. A bit of what you fancy does you good...

PurpleLostPrincess · 02/04/2007 22:44

My mum has asthma but I've been OK. When pg with DD, I craved Reese's Peanut Butter cups and ate loads of them. She is fine so far but I have always banned actual peanuts in the house to any child under the age of 5 to be on the safe side - more due to choking than anything else.

Hope you enjoyed it!
