Alcohol during pregnancy

I haven't had any alcohol during this pregnancy but I have been told you can have 1-2 units per week ! This sounds a lot to me! Has anyone had the occasional glass of bubbly at special occasions?

I had a small glass of red wine with meal on holiday at about 26 weeks and 2 small glasses of bubbles on separate occasions between weeks 32 and 39.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 02/09/2017 09:20

I had a small one - half a pint of beer or a half glass of wine - every couple of weeks from about 4 months in. I took the view that if I wasn't over the driving limit it would be unlikely to do very much.

Topseyt · 02/09/2017 09:28

I didn't, but that was mainly because I went right off alcohol during pregnancy anyway.

AccrualIntentions · 02/09/2017 09:31

I haven't had any, it just seemed easier to cut it out completely than thinking about having a little bit. But I didn't drink much at all before getting pregnant anyway.

Planned to have a small glass of fizz at my friend's wedding but then they had dry cider for the toast, which I don't like anyway!

louiserachael · 02/09/2017 09:32

Yes see I have some weddings coming up and I'm thinking do I have a glass of bubbly to toast their marriage but if I'm showing will everyone be looking at me thinking what a bad mother !! I didn't drink that much before and I don't miss it to be honest

Yeah, I've had the odd glass of wine, probably 1 a fortnight when I've been out for meals/at parties etc.

MrsChopper · 02/09/2017 09:38

It never crossed my mind to drink during my pregnancy. There are plenty no-alcohol alternatives. And alcohol even in the smallest amount can affect babies. Look up Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders - puts you right off!

Crumbelina · 02/09/2017 09:40

I've had the occasional small glass of wine after 12 weeks (usually with food) and a glass of fizz on one or two special occasions, e.g. my birthday. I'd definitely have a glass of fizz at a wedding.

All these posts seems very sensible and measured so far. Smile Anything discussing alcohol and pregnancy tend to go the same way as breastfeeding/formula feeding and Brexit threads. Wink

rememberpurpleronnie · 02/09/2017 09:40

NHS guidelines are currently for none at all, but they used to be 1-2 units 1-2 times a week. I think people would take that guideline and increase it as they saw fit as they are being told that small amounts of alcohol are safe. But the reality is none is best. That being said I have had half a glass of bubbles and the odd sip of wine when I've fancied it but not felt comfortable having a full glass. Each to their own I would say as long as you know the guidelines.

I do miss alcohol! It's amazing how many social events in the UK seem to revolve around it, at least in my experience- I've had several parties and hen dos to attend recently.

I went to two weddings around week 17 and took a sip of champagne after each toast during the speeches along with everyone else (1/3 of a glass in total, probably) but stuck to non alcoholic options the rest of the time. Doesn't seem worth the risk, to have more. But my DH and his family are really into wine, so I tend to have a sip of one or two particularly notable wines at meals when we see them. I reckon over the last 20 weeks it's added up to a glass in total. I feel optimistic that I've struck a reasonable balance... I hope!!

Saladd0dger · 02/09/2017 10:05

I craved a ice cold fosters shandy all the way through my last pregnancy. At 6 months on Boxing Day I finally gave in and poured myself a pint. 1 sip and I didn't want it lol.

Raisinbrain · 02/09/2017 10:07

I had the occasional drink. There's no evidence that small amounts of alcohol are harmful.

glastogal · 02/09/2017 10:12

Glass of champagne at a couple of weddings (although I don't think I finished it either time), got another wedding next month and I expect i will do the same - although this time it's a family one so I can expect to be glared at!!

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 02/09/2017 10:22

I've not drank any during either of my pregnancies. I don't know why people would want too to be fair. Just my opinion.

Orangebird69 · 02/09/2017 10:25

I enjoyed the odd glass of fizz after the first trimester. A glass here and there is NOT going to result in FASD. FFS.

CL1982 · 02/09/2017 11:06

If you read Expecting Better she does say the odd glass of wine with food is fine just don't binge drink :)

INeedNewShoes · 02/09/2017 11:11

I don't believe for a second that a small glass here and there would cause FSAD.

I had half a glass of wine a couple of times a month while I was pregnant, always with food and followed swiftly by a large glass of water just to offset any possible dehydration.

MrsChopper · 02/09/2017 11:17

. A glass here and there is NOT going to result in FASD. FFS.

Don't kid yourself. A 'glass here and there' is a lot of alcohol for a developing baby.

CatAnnoyance · 02/09/2017 11:18

I actually think I went off it when I was pregnant. I kept saying I couldn't wait to have a Buck's Fizz on Christmas Day when I was 7 months. Come Christmas Day it took me two hours to drink one glass, I wasn't really into it and I usually love it and can quaff loads.

10storeylovesong · 02/09/2017 11:26

I had a glass of fizz at a friend's hen do and half a shandy in a beer garden one hot day. A couple of weeks ago I treated myself to a small glass of wine at home and felt sick all night so has put me right off. I have bought myself a bottle of nice cider which is in the fridge ready for after baby's arrival.

JigglyTuff · 02/09/2017 11:34

If that were true @MrsChopper, then those of us who had children when the advice was 1-2 units 1-2 times a week would all have children with FAS.

But we don't.

OP there was a really long thread on this recently. If you fancy a glass of champagne to toast the bride and groom, then have one. You could have a few sips if it makes you feel uncomfortable. And no one has the right to judge what you're putting into your body - whether you're pregnant or not.

MaryShelley1818 · 02/09/2017 13:32

I'm 25wks pregnant and since finding out I've only had the odd sip of whatever DP orders (he rarely drinks so it's a sip once a month! Lol)
Having an odd glass of something is fine but I just don't fancy it.

travis45 · 02/09/2017 14:03

I can't wait to have a glass of wine and prosecco, not had any during pregnancy.

Don't see harm in a small glass here and there.

ohherewegoagain · 02/09/2017 14:28

I think it's too risky, if anything were to be wrong with my baby I would think back to everything I could have done to prevent it and the episode of drinking alcohol would always haunt me. Illogical probably but for me it's a 100% no.

MrsChopper · 02/09/2017 15:20

JigglyTuff I didn't say every baby will develop FAS or FASD Hmm

But every time you have a drink it will affect foetal development and increase the risk of FASD. You don't have to be an alcoholic. Each to their own but I wouldn't chance it.
