Hi,

So I read the other day about how it's best to sleep on your left side during due to a few factors and I've been trying but I can't get comfortable at all! I'm currently 16 weeks and happened to pull a muscle in my left arm the other day so lying on it hurts like crazy!!

Any advice would be appreciated xx

Sleep however you can, just make sure you sleep (says the person at 4.30am whose been up since 3 unable to get comfy 😂)
Its a guide to try sleep on left but ive spent a lot of this pregnancy asleep on my back as either side just hurts my pelvis.

Ooooh me too. I'm regularly awake at 3am. It's exhausting me tbh. I like my comfy bed but I'm just not comfy myself. Im a back sleeper but I feel like I'm suffocating after 5 mins so have to sleep on my side.

I think it's widely accepted now you can sleep however is comfy. I'm 40+2 and sleep on either side. Back sleeping has made me feel light headed for a while now.

I think I'm just overthinking lol I'm too much of a worrier!
Nice to know that there are other 3am people out there lol!

The NHS physio basically said to sleep however you can and use pillows to lift your back/support your bump. You can do other exercises later to try and help with positioning (not that they have worked for me)

I think at 16 weeks it's not such a problem and you should sleep anyway you can you get some! I could still pretty much lie on my tummy at 16 weeks.

I'm 37 weeks now and literally couldn't sleep on my back if I wanted to! I can't breathe after about 5 minutes!

Mrstobe90 · 01/09/2017 23:29

I'm already so uncomfortable in the night! Dreading how I'm going to be in the third trimester lol

As Urglewurgle says at 16 weeks it's fine, and trust me when it gets to the stage where side sleeping is better your body will tell you! I slept on my back until about 24 weeks (was the only position I didn't feel sick in!) and then as baby got bigger and heavier I started to feel sick and light-headed if I lay on my back so switched. Literally do whatever enables you to sleep OP! X

I read that when I was pregnant but would often have to go onto my other side due to getting uncomfortable. My midwife said try to avoid sleeping on your back as it can make you light headed but don't worry too much about sides.
From 14 weeks I slept with the side I was lying on leg straightish and other leg bent resting on a pillow or with both legs bent with a pillow between my knees and had the pillow positioned to also be under my bump. I didn't have much of a bump early on but it still helped me be comfortable and the pillow under your knee is supposed to help your back or something that I know can't remember (learnt that at pregnancy yoga)

Yep sleep how you can. I got a maternity pillow at 16 weeks to help get me 'learn' to lay on left side but really it wasnt an issue. I am 37 weeks now and sleep is something of the past. I spend all night tossing and turning with sharp pain in both my hips which wont go unless i stand up. What with needing a wee every 2 hours ish i would say i wake up maybe 5/6 times in 7-8 hours.......literally start racking up the sleep while you can. (I do think this is all good practice for when baby arrives though )
