I am getting measured shortly as i am 37 weeks. How many should i buy realistically as i will need 1 per day and 1 at night?

Well how many normal bras do you like to have? You can get away with 2-3 but bear in mind they have a reasonably high chance of getting milk leaked on them/getting puked on so will probably be quite frequently washed. And you don't know what sir your boobs will settle at, so I'd maybe get 2 prebirth and see how you go.

I wore a sleep bra rather than a nursing bra at night, but it's whatever works for you - it was mainly to keep the breast pads in place until I stopped leaking.

I don't wear a bra at night, I bought 5 but only really wear three of them. The washable pads are good and really comfortable. I purchased 4 bras from M&S and they're really good ones ( didn't get measured as I know how a bra should fit) and one from mothercare which is not such as good bra ( its stretched and my baby is only 7 weeks)

FATEdestiny · 31/08/2017 18:14

I had four.

It rather depends how often you do the washing. I have a family of 6 so do daily laundary. Anything put in the wash will be washed and back in the cupboard by the following day usually.

If you only wash once or twice a week, you'll need more.

scaredofthecity · 31/08/2017 18:19

I only had 2, wash one and wear one. You do so much washing anyways with a baby.
I found I was able to sleep with breast pads stuck inside a vest top - the lasinoh ones are good as they have 2 bits of sticky instead of just 1. Sleeping in a bra is so uncomfy, especially with milk engorged boobs.

I've started buying some nursing bras too. Is it likely that my band (i.e. under the boobs) measurement will shrink a bit after the birth? The bra I bought is a bit tight around there at the moment (I'm 35 wks) and I'm wondering if that's just because ribs expand during pregnancy, or whether I should get the next size up to be on the safe side.

I have two; one underwired and one non wired as it's comfier to sleep in. I find that find and just juggle washing them. I'd buy two and then if you need more you can always get them as you'll have been measured already.

MagicMoneyTree · 31/08/2017 18:27

I had 3 and another 3 sleep bras for night. No way would I have wanted to sleep in my normal nursing bras. I didn't go mad as I wasn't sure if breastfeeding would work out. It did work out, but as it happened 3 was enough for me. Plus the selection in my size was fucking hideous, so I was reluctant to fork out for any more than was absolutely necessary.

My rib cage expanded in pregnancy by 2 inches and I'm still waiting for it to shrink at 4 months following baby's birth

EssentialHummus · 31/08/2017 18:33

2 here. Check out the loveSIA brand on Amazon - the MN group for my month raves about them!

GreenGoblin0 · 31/08/2017 18:49

I have two. have never needed a sleep bra.

Jellybabie3 · 31/08/2017 19:04

Ok i guess i go for two then and see how i go. I guess this means that i will be washing every other day Confused

I have 6, but 2 of them are quite uncomfortable for night time use. I recommend M&S soft non wired nursing bras, sizes come in S, M, L etc. Sooo comfortable. I have to wear a bra at night or I would leak. Any bras you get are going to get leaked and vomited on, so good to have plenty spare. Also, I have noticed that I definitely have to wear a fresh one each day, unlike my regular bras, because with the best will in the world they will smell like cheese by the end of one day. Sorry....Blush

GreenGoblin0 · 31/08/2017 20:08

Obv everyone's different but I bf'd DD1 for 2 years and DD2 for 5 months (so far ) and never needed to wash bras every day. haven't needed to wear a bra at night either - leaking didn't last that long and got away with breast pads down pj top

ems137 · 31/08/2017 21:05

I have 3 nursing bras and a sleep bra. The sleep one is just a regular seam free stretchy bra from the supermarket that cost around £6 I think. Perfect for holding breastpads in place, giving a little support and super comfy for sleeping in.

LittleWingSoul · 31/08/2017 21:57

I had loada - some pretty ones for the day time and sleep bras for the night. They kept breast pads in place and my boobs were so tender they need to be contained to avoid nipples getting trapped under DH's elbow or something!

To keep the cost down I bought loads second hand on ebay, my favourite brand is 'hot milk' for the daytime bras and sainsbos stretchy one piece bras for sleeping in.

LittleWingSoul · 31/08/2017 21:59

Personally I think if you can keep the cost down by buying second hand, you can't have too many. I didnt do a load of laundry every day with a new baby (especially with DC1) and you can get through a few in a day if you are quite leaky.

LittleWingSoul · 31/08/2017 22:00

Oops sorry and yes agree with pp, stock up after birth as they will change size quite a bit post-engorgement!

CatsCantFlyFast · 31/08/2017 22:05

I'd get one at this stage. Measurements pre birth are not indicative of what will happen afterwards - some people's boobs get huge and some women lose weight from their boobs.

I'd recommend one cheapest bra now. Some vest tops (with nursing straps) to sleep in (they'll hold breastpads in place if you need them as have a double layer) and then get remeasured (or measure yourself or get a come to home service - next often do them) a couple of weeks after birth
