Pregnancy Paranoia

So I found out 2 weeks ago that hubby and I are expecting Smile I'm 7weeks exactly (baby is due 19 April 2018)

It's my first pregnancy (and was a bit of a surprise) and I'm totally freaking out food wise. I'm googling literally everything before I eat it as I'm terrified I'm going to eat something that's bad for baby - I googled if I can drink bitter lemon/tonic water (need fizzy and can't stand caffeine free coke!) and freaked when I read quinine is really bad for baby!

Anyone else gone a bit bonkers after finding out they are expecting?

Quinine is fine in moderation - I had really bad restless legs during pregnancy and the consultant said a glass of tonic water before bed will help so don't worry about that!

I was a bit concerned at first about food and drink but soon felt sick on everything anyway... eventually went back to normal and now I am having most things in moderation - yes even the odd can of coke!! You will relax as the pregnancy goes on.

Stitch - Thank you! I'm normally a sane and rational person but since finding out I'm pregnant I've lost the plot! I've even googled if I can eat Krispy Kremes!

I don't think it helps that I've not seen a midwife yet - GP has sent a referral but I've not heard from anyone yet Confused

I remember really craving fizzy drinks at the beginning and looking at all of them at the supermarket and being gutted to find out they all had caffeine apart from sprite which I didn't fancy! You will genuinely chill out by the end, if I knew at like 17 weeks I'd be here at 40 weeks having a cheeky can of coke I would have been horrified but honestly you really relax, there might be times where you don't fancy anything so if you fancy a Krispy Kreme then go for it, like I said it's all in moderation, they didn't really discuss what I could/couldn't eat in the appointments, just be careful of caffeine limits, soft cheeses, shell fish etc- especially in early pregnancy xx

I remember googling everything to, just look on the NHS website ( if you're UK based) as that gives you a list. American sites tell you that loads of things are banned, sometimes I would keep searching sites till I found one that said I was fine to eat xy or z lol.

In the UK you can now have runny eggs as long as the egg has the lion symbol on, this was the one thing I really wanted during pregnancy and couldn't, also a nice rare steak sadly no site would tell me that was ok.

Oh and congratulations x

Had no idea Sprite was caffeine free! Definitely stocking up on that! Grin

fizzytonicplease i am UK based so I've been following what's on the NHS website, I'm glad to hear we can eat runny lion stamped eggs - I can't stand over cooked eggs!

You can have caffeine. It's not a poison.

The risks from food are really very very low. Try not to stress and just eat healthily (if you can manage it in the first trimester...).

scaredofthecity · 31/08/2017 18:14

I was so anxious for my first, 2nd time around I'm a lot more relaxed. The risks are very small and caffeine is not evil and can actually help with those awful 1st trimester headaches you get. It's just moderation that's important.
It will get better, and 2nd time around you just don't have time to be anxious!

Garliccalamari · 31/08/2017 18:37

Don't drink alcohol (or as little as possible), don't smoke (or as little as possible) and take prenatal vitamins. Try to live a healthy lifestyle.

Those are the most important rules. The other food rules are less important because they don't happen as often. Yes, a listeria bacteria can cause a miscarriage. But most people who eat french cheeses daily don't ever get this kind of food poisening. So the chance that you will get it while pregnant is also very, very low. But if you want to be sure you can follow them of course.

Don't get scared if you get it "wrong" once in a while. Millions of women have surprise pregnancy's where they did all the "wrong" stuff before they found out and still have healthy babies.

I'm just 2 days behind you OP, 7 weeks on sat! And can't tell you how many times I've googled ___ ok during pregnancy since I've found out. Just went out to dinner and accidentally ate gorgonzola in a pasta sauce so I freaked out for a minute before realising it was cooked 😂

I googled everything to start with too - everything seemed to be a no! After talking to my midwife I switched to the NHS website guides and being sensible. I found quite quickly my diet became what baby wanted, especially first trimester - finding foods that feel fine inside - bloating/nausea wise. 15wks and on cereal, fruit, salad, ice lollies, lots of squash/water, chocolate and a small portion of carbs and protein.
