How do I eat when nausea strikes?

I'm 6 weeks and the nausea has started to hit. I'm really struggling to eat anything with nutritional value. All I want is crackers and crisps.

I'm able to force myself to have a decent breakfast but come 10am it all goes down hill. I keep reading how important a healthy diet is, but the thought of most food makes me feel green.
Last night I actually fancied pizza (not great I know, but at least it was something different) but then once I took one bite, I thought I was going to throw up and couldn't eat it.

My BMI on on the low side so part of me thinks that any food is better than no food. But then again, a day of beige food can't be great.
Anyone else in a similar position or have any advice?

Just eat whatever you can eat - nutrition is obviously important but the nausea won't last forever. I ate a lot of oatcakes and crackers to start off with!

Seeline · 30/08/2017 11:00

If it's any help, my DS is a strapping 15yo now. I lived on dry rice krispies for 16 weeks (if I could keep those down....)
Eat what you can, when you can, and hope you feel better soon. Little and often can help.

PinkHeart5911 · 30/08/2017 11:01

Plain biscuits ( I always carry some in my bag)

Crisps

Nuts ( I've got s pot of them in my bag too)

I find drinking coke cola helps when I feel sick

Most times pregnancy sickness will pass after the first few weeks, so if all you can eat for now is crackers and crisps eat that. When the sickness calms down for you, you can look at eating more healthy

Urglewurgle · 30/08/2017 11:02

To be honest I just ate what I thought I'd keep down and what I had the energu to prepare. If that meant beige food then that's what I had. I found little and often helped with the nausea, if I let myself get too hungry I'd be sick.

I'd keep things like babybel, grapes, crackers, mini haribo bags etc. handy for when I got hungry-pukey.

As soon as the nausea wore off a little I make the effort to eat more healthily. Before that I was kinda just trying to get through the day!

TobleroneBoo · 30/08/2017 11:07

I'm 8 weeks and feeling the same. I found yesterday that microwave egg fried rice and chopped up Bernard Matthews chicken chunks sorted me right out

I think it was the slight greasiness / carbiness / saltiness

Anatidae · 30/08/2017 11:08

Eat whatever you can get down you.

I had HG with my first and my planned healthy eating went out the window. I just ate whatever I could (which wasn't much...)

Anatidae · 30/08/2017 11:10

nutrition is obviously important but the nausea won't last forever.

Hate to be Debbie downer here but it can. I had HG and it lasted until he was born. Even after he was born I've been left with the last two weeks of my cycle making me intensely sick. So that sucks.

Hopefully it'll get better for you OP, but don't fret about what you're eating. Make sure you take your folic acid.

tinymeteor · 30/08/2017 11:12

Little and often. Nausea gets worse when your stomach is empty.

I'm currently 9 weeks and feeling like shit. Only want to eat hangover food. Can't bear fruit. I've got a massive multipack of French Fries that are my go-to junk option at the moment. Sometimes a rubbishy snack takes the edge off the nausea enough to eat something a bit more nutritious afterwards.

Take your pregnancy vitamins and just eat what you can manage. When the nausea passes you can get back on the healthy stuff again.

CleanYourRoom · 30/08/2017 11:13

Tiny bits of food frequently. I also drank fizzy drinks, particularly ginger ale or fizzy water. These made me burp and I felt slightly better!

If your nutrition was good pre pregnancy your baby will likely be fine.

I ended one of my pregnancies on what seemed to be a diet of cheese sandwiches and worried like mad, but the baby has grown up to be a very fit child!

CleanYourRoom · 30/08/2017 11:14

I should say I sipped fizzy drinks. I wasn't drinking vast amounts of them.

MissMHannah · 30/08/2017 11:23

Sometimes when i was pregnant with my DS and suffered from HG (terribly from 2wks pregnant until i gave birth) i used to force feed myself try toast just lightly done (no butter, nothing on it at all) and jacobs cream crackers just plain withh nothing on. And lots of ice cold water (full of ice cubes as cold as you can get it), also i found caffine free ginger tea helped or sniffing a lemon!! Hope this helps lol. Goodluck hun x

MissMHannah · 30/08/2017 11:26

Another thing OP, if your worried about missing out on nutrients/vitamins ect make sure your taking a pregnancy supplement/supplements. I have always swore by and stuck to pregnacare (abit pricey but id say they are so worth it) x

sunbird17 · 30/08/2017 11:29

I had terrible all-day nausea and vomiting from weeks 6 to 22. My doctor told me to eat mixed nuts if I couldn't manage anything else. The baby takes everything it needs from you so it will be fine if you don't eat healthily for a few weeks. Things that I could (sometimes) eat were biscuits, crisps, nuts, gherkins, tinned pineapple and ice lollies. Water was out, but I could keep down diluted apple juice. I couldn't eat vegetables (and usually I am a big veg eater). I was also advised not to take any supplements (apart from folic acid) as they can make nausea worse.

bulldogmum · 30/08/2017 11:32

If it's really crippling chat to your gp, there are meds you can take.
I'm 17 weeks and had to take meds to be able to keep anything in. Also as others have said anything is better than nothing so if it's all beige that's fine. Also drinks like lucozade and coke dipped in small amounts can help. This is my second baby and last time I ate nothing but custard donuts for a week (sugary fatty urgh) but I have a very healthy 18 month old. I also had sickness with her for the entire pregnancy which is no fun and again gp prescribed meds to get through it. If it helps then it does end, this time round I feel more human now at 17 weeks. Just eat little and often, tiredness can make it worse so get lots of rest too. Good luck!

mummabubs · 30/08/2017 11:33

Little and often and whatever you can face- crackers and crisps sound good to me! For weeks 7-12 I pretty much existed on completely plain boiled spaghetti with a pinch of salt on it as that was the only thing I could stomach the idea of! 🙈 Really hope you feel better soon, I'm 35 weeks and only just stopped being sick last week (although my nausea disappeared around week 16), fingers crossed you get rid of morning sickness sooner! X

mummabubs · 30/08/2017 11:35

And personally as sunbird said I'd avoid any vits other than folic acid and vit D as these can make you more nauseous 😊

StepAwayFromCake · 30/08/2017 11:45

I felt so awful that I lost weight in the first trimester with dc1 (who is currently tramping up Skiddaw carrying half of all the gear for three walkers, so he clearly didn't suffer).

Lessons learned:

• Go with the flow. Do not worry, just make sure you drink and do not get dehydrated.

• Rest when you can. I could not eat at all if I was too tired. Half an hour nap, actually asleep, enabled me to eat.

• Eat whatever takes your fancy. Don't worry about nutrition right now.

• Eat lots of small meals, rather than trying to pack in a full meal.

• Keeping blood sugars fairly level (hence small meals). I had biscuits and water by my bed, and would have a nibble whenever I woke, whether at night to go to the loo or in the morning before getting up for the day.

Things that sometimes soothe the nausea:
Ice cubes or ice-lollies.
Ginger.
Black pepper.
Crunchy, fairly bland things, like oatcakes, toast, rich tea biscuits.
Sipping fizzy water. The tingle in my mouth felt good.

Argeles · 30/08/2017 11:58

Eat and drink whatever you can/fancy, whenever you are able to, even if you only fancy junk.

In the first trimester of my first pregnancy, I ate so many chocolate pastries from Costa - I was practically living on those alone! My DD was born in full health.

Try and make sure you are drinking enough. I have been so bad in this pregnancy that the thought of most drinks have been making me gag. One drink that has been great for me is iced jasmine tea - it's very good for pregnancy nausea. I boil water and make a large bottle of tea and leave it to cool. I then put it in the freezer for about an hour and it's ready - delicious!

Green tea has also been good too - you could have this hot or iced.

If you feel the nausea is unbearable, go straight to your Doctor and tell them so. I did, and my male Doctor was very sympathetic and prescribed me anti-nausea tablets. They are not at all harmful to the baby, and have taken most of my crippling nausea away. I am now able to eat and drink a far wider variety of food and drink. The negative side though is that they make me very drowsy, but I'd rather that than feel sick constantly.

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 30/08/2017 12:03

I was the same in the first trimester. Just eat what you can manage x

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 30/08/2017 12:30

What everyone else said. DD is made of GrapeNuts cereal, Jarlsberg and dry toast. Also ice cold sparkling water. She is a slender, petite little thing hitting all her milestones and very alert.

This time around I want beef sandwiches and salty stuff. Veggies, bleurgh.

Unless you are unlucky it will lift by the halfway point and even then, it is only 40 weeks. You will be okay!

CleanYourRoom · 30/08/2017 12:41

Resting also helped me a lot. More rest than I ever could have imagined before..

ForeverHopeful21 · 30/08/2017 12:51

Thank you for all the replies and reassurance!
I've clearly been panicking over nothing. My last pregnancy ended in MC, so I think I'm just worrying about everything right now.

Loved the suggestions ...ice lollies and fizzy drinks are sounding very good to me right now!!

I was very ill with DS the first few weeks - couldn't even keep down water. However I could manage Danish pastries, orange Fanta and M&S Wotsits. I'm lucky DS wasn't born orange!

Anatidae · 30/08/2017 13:19

Don't panic about nausea - I think there's research showing that people who experience bad Morning sickness are actually slightly less likely to miscarry.

Do, however, go to the doc if it gets really bad.

demirose87 · 30/08/2017 13:25

I always found sipping cold Lucozade ( orange or original flavour)helped my nausea although it probably wouldn't be advised because of the sugar content. And it gave me a bit of a lift when I was lacking energy due to sickness.
