Hi all,

I am new to this site and I have just found out that I am expecting.

I am due to go on holiday tomorrow, and have an appointment for shellac nails.

Does anyone know if this is safe to do in the first trimester?

I have asked a lot of Mums that I know and I am getting very mixed answers, so I am unsure whether to go ahead or not.

Thanks all for your help :)

I've also wondered whether it's okay too. I have a feeling it's the fumes the the nail shop that are no good for pregnant women but not too sure. Hopefully someone can advise you (and me) on here.

Yes, I thought maybe the fumes and possibly more from the acetone used to remove the shellac than anything else.

Maybe we could just ask for one of the masks that they sometimes use in the nail salons :)

I've had gel polish on my fingers through this pregnancy & with DS. I get my nails done at a beauty therapist though rather than a nail bar so there are no fumes to worry about.

I would use a mobile person if possible that way you can make sure the area is well ventilated!

Hi I'm a beauty therapist (and pregnant).
CND (the company who make Shellac) say that it is fine to have the treatment throughout pregnancy. They do lots of testing so there's nothing to worry about in terms of the treatment itself.

However, some salons / spas / therapists won't treat those under 12 weeks due to insurance purposes. So if you tell them that you're pregnant, they may not do the treatment. This isn't necessarily because it's unsafe, but because insurance companies are very strict when it comes to treating pregnant ladies.

As someone who provides nail treatments the 'fumes' from a one hour appointment is not going to cause any harm. I checked with my GP because I was worried about my own health and they weren't concerned at all. Most decent salons will have ventilation in place.
For peace of mind or if in doubt go to a home salon / independent therapist or a mobile nail tech.

Is a spray tan ok?

ClaireBear1986 · 30/08/2017 13:59

Thanks all, that is really helpful.

With it being my 1st pregnancy and still early days I am quite worried about doing anything that may harm the baby.

Just to double check, what do people suggest with hair dye / bleach. As again I have been told different things.

Is it best to avoid for the whole pregnancy, just avoid for the 1st 12 weeks or is it safe to carry on?

Thanks again for all your replies :)
