Is ovulation day a big deal?

I've just downloaded an ovulation app and the one day we dtd this month is apparently my ovulation day. How likely am I to get pregnant on this day? I know it increases chances but because of urine infection we couldn't dtd all month so I'm staking everything on one day (which is ovulation day!) chances have got to be good, right?

If you are only able to dtd once a month then ovulation day is a good day to choose!

KarateKitten · 29/08/2017 09:27

It's a difficult one as even when everything is done perfectly not all lead to a conception so don't be too disappointed. It's important to time with ovulation and it sounds like you have a good shot but I seem to remember that day before ovulation has best chances because peak ovulation shows when ovulation has occurred so it might be too late by the time you have sex, somebody may correct me on that?

But I think you have a decent chance. Good luck with staying patient to find out in too weeks!

KarateKitten · 29/08/2017 09:27

Two.

LadyPug · 29/08/2017 09:33

Thank you, ah yes and we dtd around 11.30pm so late on ovulation day. Sorry to be clueless but is that how long you have to wait? Two weeks before it will show on a test?

The app just guesses ovulation based on period though... it could have been early or late...

And even if it happened on that day it's impossible to know what time?

Good luck though

LadyPug · 29/08/2017 09:40

Thanks red tartan, yes that's true, although the app knows more than me right now! Haha!

Everyone's cycle is different, but the 'average' time between ovulation and a period is 14 days. It's called the luteal phase.

It isn't till your period is due that you can do a reliable pregnancy test so people call it the two week wait, because it's the time between when you ovulate and when it's likely to show on a pregnancy test (although some people get positive tests earlier).

After ovulation it will take the egg, if it is fertilised, 7-10 days to implant in the womb (hopefully).

Why does your app say ovulation was that day? What data did you put in? I ask because if it is just assuming you have a 28 day cycle and ovulate on day 14 and going off that, then it could be wrong as lots of people don't ovulate on day 14. So keep DTD every other day this cycle, and then next cycle look out for signs of ovulation like egg white cervical mucus, or you could use ovulation prediction kits if you like.

Good luck!

Ah thank you mctutty. I'm not sure, I input my last three period dates to the app and the length they usually last then it has said yesterday was the predicted ovulation date. Think it's our only chance this month as do now away for a few days and back post ovulation so we're staking everything on this one day!!!

Ideally, it's best to dtd in the several days leading up to ovulation day as it takes several hours to about 12 hours for sperm to reach the egg, so they have a better chance if you give them a head start and they can be waiting for the egg to be released (Sperm can live for 7 days, but egg only survives 12-24 hours, which is why the timing is important).

That said, it's just based on your period dates, it's totally just a guess. It's just assuming you ovulate the midpoint of your cycle and not every woman does, so there's no knowing if that's when you ovulated. In fact, it could have been several days before or after. I wouldn't even both with those sorts of apps unless it can be more accurate with you inputting more data (temps, cervical mucus, opks). You can probably work out for yourself when day 14 is in your cycle, which is really all its doing.

As for your chances this month, it's impossible to know, but no harm in being hopeful. Good luck.

Did you mean to post in the pregnancy topic (not currently pregnant, but even I know that you dodn't ovulate during pregnancy)

There's a whole Conception topic

Thanks an utter idiot, this is really helpful! Haha sorry Trojan, I'm pretty new to this so obviously not everyone is up to your level! Consider it noted and I will post in ovulation until I've gained the rights to post in here ;-)

I used an app called Natural Cycles to log my temperature which helps predict when you've ovulated. I had been using a period tracker app like the one you mentioned for a year before just because it's handy to know when it's coming. And that assumed I ovulated on day 14. Through charting I learned that I actually ovulated quite late! And our first month of trying with the new ovulation date info we got our BFP.

Dating scan etc support the notion that I ovulated on the day the charting suggested.

If you can, DTD a couple of times a week and that will cover all bases. If you're apart a lot and it's not practical etc I'd recommend using tests as PP has mentioned or charting etc to get a clearer idea of your cycle.

As PP have mentioned it's a two week wait to find out. Try to be kind to yourself, it's tempting to Google every symptom and test early but hang on if you can. I got my BFP the day before my period was due.

Good luck & fingers crossed for you Smile

they are not that reliable - but as you say it was difficult this month due to infection. We got pregnant after 2 months of trying, by going at it like clockwork for the 4 days either side of when I thought I ought to be ovulating. I think that maximises your chances, along with holding your legs high in the air afterwards. Don't bother the rest of the month - its really unlikely and the risk is you end up missing a day at a crucial time.

Thanks guys, this helps so much! X

I done the ovulation tests for 7 day said I wasn't ovulating. Literally days later my partner and I had sex and I fell pregnant!

harleysmammy · 29/08/2017 22:42

They are handy to track dates but in my experience they're more stress than they're worth. I had about 3 apps when we was ttc. After three months I got a new phone so just didn't download the apps. Two months later I fell pregnant. The whole time I was tracking and stressing and literally grabbing my partner on ovulation day and dtd until our hearts content and I didn't get pregnant..We carelessly have sex whenever we wanted too without stressing about dates etc and we got pregnant pretty quick! He's now a beautiful 4 month old so either way, good luck x

LadyPug · 29/08/2017 22:44

Thank you Harley's mammy!

If you want to know how I did it (4 times on first try....well 4th was an accident), it's cervical mucus that tells me along with an overwhelming urge to shag everything/person in sight😉 Somehow that has always worked so listen when your body is telling you😂
