Hi all, I know I posted a couple of days ago asking about my scan, but upon closer inspection, what I thought was the scrotal sac, is in fact umbilical cord! So going by my potty shot, what does everybody think??? I've added my potty shot, plus another image that shows what an umbilical cord looks like on a scan pic...i 'think' I can make out 'boys bits' underneath the cord...just not sure...any opinions are greatly appreciated!

It's not possible to say. If you want to know desperately get genetic testing done.

Your name is visible on the first pic - you may want to redact it.

IndianaMoleWoman · 28/08/2017 20:04

Did the sonographer not tell you what they thought?

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 28/08/2017 20:05

My anatomy scan is in a couple of weeks, I hope to get an answer then...genetic testing? Doesn't that run a risk of miscarriage? I've had multiple mc's so that's not a risk I'd be willing to take...

Sono lady said she thought it was a boy, but hands and cord were in the way alot.

No you can find out the sex through simple blood tests but it costs a lot of money and the test is actually done for genetic reasons usually. Google the harmony test or similar.

RuskBaby · 28/08/2017 20:07

If it means so much, why don't you book a private scan. You can get them for around £50.

PacificDogwod · 28/08/2017 20:08

There's really no way to tell from a grainy scan shot, sorry.

It is either a boy or a girl and either way that decision is made. Wishing you a healthy pregnancy and baby.

If you want a more detailed scan for the purpose of finding out the baby's sex, you'd need to arrange for private scanning. NHS scans look for abnormalities, not sex and most radiographers will not (and are told not to) comment on sex.

KindleBueno · 28/08/2017 20:08

Your name's visible OP

IndianaMoleWoman · 28/08/2017 20:08

I've had two girls and you can see three very clear white lines in the potty shot, I can't see them here but obviously I'm not expert and they won't be visible if the cord/hands are in the way. Was it a private sex scan? Did they not offer a free rescan if it was inconclusive?

MadameJosephine · 28/08/2017 20:10

I can't tell from those images tbh but sometimes I can see better on the moving image and then it's difficult to produce a 'potty shot' for parents so if the sonographer said boy then she must be reasonably sure.

Anatidae · 28/08/2017 20:13

No, genetic testing uses free foetal DNA in the maternal circulation. They take a sample of your blood and amplify up the foetal component (I would love to know exactly how as I'm a sort of a geneticist by training but that's proprietary so I likely never will...)
They can amplify up the foetal DNA md test it for various abnormalities (trisomies, deletions, a few specific point mutations.) and they can tell the sex of the baby. Zero risk to the foetus.

The scan pics are too poor to tell. You can get sexing scans quite cheaply if you really want to know.

JessieMcJessie · 28/08/2017 20:17

What are you so anxious about this?

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 28/08/2017 20:19

Thanks everyone for all the info. It was a private scan, sonographer said she 'thinks' boy, but the hand and cord got in the way alot. I'm sure she's right. You just hear of so many people being told one sex and having the other! They tell you the sex at my hospital, so fingers crossed baby is cooperating on the day!

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 28/08/2017 20:22

What do you mean? Aren't most mums-to-be eager to know...i already have a wonderful son, this is my last child and would have loved to have both a son and a daughter.

OP posts:
chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 28/08/2017 20:23

I think it's a baby... 😁

Ultrasounds aren't 100% correct though, even if your hospital is sure what sex your child is.

Tattybogle89 · 28/08/2017 20:25

Looks boy to me

Ledkr · 28/08/2017 20:27

I think it's your op which says "desperately needed" that made someone ask why you were so anxious to know.

Parker231 · 28/08/2017 20:33

Why not just wait until it is born?

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 28/08/2017 20:33

Ah, ok..gotcha. Perhaps 'desperately needed' were not the right choice of words. Sorry.

Yep, it's certainly a baby Smile

OP posts:
JessieMcJessie · 28/08/2017 20:34

Exactly that- you said you were "desperate" and that indicates more than normal eagerness to know. If you want to be sure, pay for a Harmony test.

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 28/08/2017 20:37

I could never wait that long to find out...im one of those people who have to have everything ready in advance etc. I wish I could wait, what a lovely surprise!

OP posts:
Allmychildrenhavepaws · 28/08/2017 20:38

Again, sorry for my choice of words in OP

OP posts:
talonofthehawks · 28/08/2017 20:39

You've had several mc's you say- just try to relax and stop worrying about something so trivial.

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 29/08/2017 12:12

How do I remove the image with my name on?

OP posts:
Allmychildrenhavepaws · 29/08/2017 12:13

Or how do I delete the thread now that I've had some kind responses?
