Pregnancy Vitamins?

Hello, I have just received my BFP this morning (very exciting!). I have been taking folic acid whilst trying to conceive but wondered if anyone had recommendations for branded pregnancy vitamins. Thanks!

Congratulations!

I'm taking these as they were the ones my midwife recommended.

Pregnancy Vitamins?

Congratulations Ppol Grin I'm had repeat blood tests for my ferritin levels (I haven't had results yet but it's no surprise if my iron is low. Every vitamin has a mineral partner or combination and it's essential that you take all to get the full benefits. For instance, folic acid, and B12, VitD and iron should be taken together. I have been taking folic acid only and it's looking like I'm deficient in either VitD or B12 so my iron is therefore low. I now take pregnacare original.

YorkieDorkie · 28/08/2017 16:36

@SheSaidHeSaid beat me to it Grin

Ppol · 28/08/2017 16:38

Thank you. This all feels very new! Will order some now

In addition to folic acid, I just took Boots own-brand vitamin D tablets. They're cheap, tiny (so easy to swallow) and widely available. Job done! Later in my pregnancy when I learned I was slightly anaemic I added a Boots iron tablet to my daily routine.

dementedpixie · 28/08/2017 16:41

The only ones actually recommended to take are folic acid and vitamin d. I have seen a few threads on here where pregnacare was making people feel sick and they were changing away from them

SheSaidHeSaid · 28/08/2017 16:43

I've felt absolutely fine on them, each to their own I guess.

MujosMama · 28/08/2017 16:53

My midwife specifically said that she recommended an own brand e.g. Boots as they are cheaper than pregnacare and in her words the exact same thing :) I also got a little free pot of nhs ones in the pack she gave me with my notes book but my friend at a different hospital didn't so it must depend where you live

Lana1234 · 28/08/2017 16:59

My midwife also recommended Boots own branded ones and I'm currently taking them now. They are only about £3 for a pack of 30 and she said they do the exact same as pregnacare Smile

SheSaidHeSaid · 28/08/2017 17:05

Oh right. I got 90 pregnacare for £9 off Amazon but if boots is better I'll just get them next time.

YorkieDorkie · 28/08/2017 18:12

I don't think a pregnant woman is the best judge of whether something makes them feel sick or not!

Llogan2016 · 28/08/2017 18:42

I've taken the pregnacare all the way through and managed to maintain my ferritin levels all the way through, which is brilliant as I normally have low iron. I just kept my eye out for offers and managed to do quite well.

Usernamegone · 28/08/2017 18:46

When I registered with Boots baby club I had a free pot of folic acid and vit D in the advantage card app. I now take the seven seas pregnancy vitamins now as I find I get on better with them than pregnecare (and they are cheaper)

mummabubs · 28/08/2017 19:09

Entirely up to you what you take OP (congrats on your BFP by the way!)

Personally I have just taken supermarket brand vit D and folic acid as these are the only ones recommended by the NHS and the amount of vitamin in these is exactly the same as branded ones 4 times the price. Your body will take all additional vitamins/nutrients it needs from you without the need for additional vitamins. There's no evidence to suggest that taking anything else is beneficial to the development of your baby or that you're negatively affecting their development if you don't. I also personally avoided pregnacare partly due to the extortionate cost but also as Dementedpixie pointed out so many people I know both in real life and on here have found it just makes them feel nauseous/vomit (which is a completely expected side effect if you've got too much of certain vitamins or iron in your bloodstream!)

Merida83 · 28/08/2017 20:00

Congratulations. Very exciting times.
I have been taking seven seas Pregnancy all stages vitamins. Had no issues or side effects and it contains all they recommend for during pregnancy!
Hope you have a lovely smooth pregnancy!

Ppol · 28/08/2017 20:44

Thank you very much everyone. This is all very new and there is a lot to learn!

Tesco own brand, much cheaper and as another poster said exactly same quantities as the branded ones. Never had any problems with side effects and as mentioned above have also heard of problems with pregnacare from a few friends. Do make sure you buy pregnancy specific ones though as you mustn't have too much vitamin A which is included in standard multivitamins but not pregnancy ones.

Alexandra07 · 28/08/2017 21:36

My midwife told me that vitamin D and folic acid is enough. Folic acid you don't need to take until the end of the pregnancy but it helps with the absorption of iron. The cheapest I found were the nhs ones:

www.healthystart.nhs.uk/for-health-professionals/vitamins/

Even if you don't qualify for free vitamins or vouchers (I don't), you can buy a combination of vit D and folic acid for £1. I can't remember how many you get, I finished one bottle and threw it, but they are definitely cheaper than the boots ones. I had bought some from boots before my midwife told me about these, once they finish I will go back for the nhs ones. There is a list of places you can buy them in the above website.
