I'm now just past 40 weeks and saw an acquaintance who knows I'm due now and she said 'Oh my God! You look huge! Or is it just the dress?'
SO RUDE! Even if I am huge. Actually most people (who are maybe just being nice, but it's good to be nice!) have said I don't look that big considering I'm due to give birth...

I always get this too. I'm 34 plus 2 with baby number 4. I think people mean it in the nicest way possible. Smile

Bobbiepin · 25/08/2017 17:40

Its like if you're pregnant people take that to mean that calling you huge isn't actually calling you huge but it definitely is.

Penguin27 · 25/08/2017 17:44

I got told this today too... at 19+6! To be fair though, I do look pretty huge.

I've been guilty of calling a heavily pregnant woman (not sure, but could probably say women!) huge before... I kind of see it as more of just commenting on the size of the baby rather than the lady, but maybe I'll change my mind over the next 20 weeks.

CWG17 · 25/08/2017 17:45

Nobody means it nastily. You're 40 weeks pregnant, of course you're huge.

It's not acceptable to comment on anyone's appearance like this but it happens, unfortunately.

meltingmarshmallows · 25/08/2017 17:46

Someone asked me recently if I was having "1, or a whole litter?".

I don't think people mean it badly, they're excited by a pregnant person but it's the last thing we want to hear.

Ikabod · 25/08/2017 17:52

I'm 37+4 weeks with DC2. I'm getting SO bored of the comments. Literally EVERYONE has something to say. Yes, they all mean to be kind/humorous but being told you look huge all the time is really grating, even if it's meant in the best possible way!

Chloris33 · 25/08/2017 17:55

Yep, you're probably right, but it's definitely the last thing we want to hear, especially when already feeling fed up and grouchy being overdue!

It's so annoying. No one who has been pregnant themselves does it, but I have a lot of childless colleagues I dreaded bumping into as every single time I saw them they commented on my size. Even if I'd only seen them the day before I'd get 'omg I think you're getting bigger every day'

I know it isn't meant badly but it's really thoughtless.

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/08/2017 18:20

The thing is, people aren't really used to seeing full term women, and they can look pretty large.

I was mahoosive. DD is 7, and our combined weight now is still just under what it was the day before I went in to get induced.

Lemondrop99 · 25/08/2017 18:31

I didn't realise until I got pregnant that any comment on a bump has the potential to upset a pregnant women! Honestly, it was just such an obvious thing to mention when making conversation and I never thought a "big" bump was a bad thing, just a nice sign that someone was pregnant.

Since being on here, I've heard pregnant women get offended about any mention of small bumps, big bumps etc. So now I know not to mention it!

Personally it doesn't bother me. I've been told I'm small and huge by two different people in the same day! They are almost certainly commenting on your bump rather than meaning you are huge. I doubt there's any malice behind it. I just smile politely.

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 25/08/2017 19:16

I don't get the agony over comments like this really. They obviously aren't saying YOU are huge, they're saying you look hugely pregnant. It's exciting because it means a baby is imminent and it's a state they're not used to seeing you in. If they were just saying you're fat they wouldn't say it, would they? (Most people anyway!)

Urglewurgle · 25/08/2017 19:18

My manager has called me various variations on this pretty much the whole way through. She doesn't mean it to be nasty and I've just laughed it off but it has upset me. I've found my changing shape hard to deal with.

LapinR0se · 25/08/2017 19:20

I live in Geneva where people are obsessed with being slim in pregnancy. I am 23 weeks and get warned almost daily about not eating too much cake Hmm

Urglewurgle · 25/08/2017 19:21

Melting a litter? Like an animal? Hmm

That would upset me a little, I know they were just making a joke but I already feel self-conscious and like a ginormous waddling blimp without people commenting on it in horror!

Somerville · 25/08/2017 19:22

I'm 37 weeks and the other day got "Have you got a litter in there?"
Angry Angry Angry

fatfingeredfran · 25/08/2017 19:29

@TiffanyAtBreakfast

The thing is that sometimes pregnant ladies are struggling with medical conditions that mean the baby isn't growing as it should, hence the small bump, or on the other hand some medical conditions cause a baby to grow too much or cause excess fluid around the baby, hence a big bump. All of these carry increased risks of things like stillbirth and other horrible things, and when you are pregnant and stressing about one of these medical problems the last thing you need is well meaning acquaintances commenting several times a day on it and reminding you of it. Quite often you're just trying to get through the day.

One person making a comment once isn't likely to upset, but trust me when it's the 10th time you've heard it that day and you are struggling to come to terms with having a sick baby it is very upsetting.

People just shouldn't comment on bump size, whether it's big or small.

meltingmarshmallows · 25/08/2017 19:34

@Urglewurgle I assume so! Was a bit Confused but they are lovely (and haven't been pregnant yet) so I think they were just trying to be funny ... albeit getting it a bit wrong

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 25/08/2017 23:16

Yes I know and understand that aspect of it because I'm already a mother (although OP actually said nothing about that, she was just miffed to be told that she looks 'huge'). But lots of people just aren't aware, and in their minds you are just excited to be pregnant and expecting. It's just human small talk, and unfortunately its always going to happen. So the best option is just to let it wash over you.
