Retroverted uterus and scans?

I went for a private scan at 6+3 and had an external scan, saw baby and all was ok.
I was booked for a scan for today (9+4) and when I went in, ended up having to have an internal scan due to a retroverted uterus.

Does anyone know why this would have happened between the 2 appointments?
Does it mean that at my 12 week scan, I will need an internal too?

My second pregnancy I had a retroverted uterus but they didn't need to do internal scans at all. I think the baby was always visible and there just was no need. But it's made no difference in any way, shape, or form, which I am told isn't always the case. So maybe I was just lucky. Sorry I don't have any more information than that. Hopefully someone else will have.

When I went for a very early scan a very silly doctor told me I wasn't even pregnant...i Have retroverted uterus and I was later informed during reassurance scan at EPU that with some women a pregnancy is more difficult to see during the scan...

Due to retroverted uterus I should add...

I've got a retroverted uterus and always had external scans, I think it depends on where the foetus is lying.
After a certain number of weeks your uterus corrects itself and flips forwards apparently

ijustwannadance · 25/08/2017 10:47

I had to have internal scans early on but 12 week was fine with just drinking the pint of water before.
You still may need one. You may not.

I had a retroverted uterus at 8w and had an internal scan. 12w and 20w scan were abdominal and fine. I assume as your uterus grows it comes more forward so baby is easier to see

PebblesFlintstone · 25/08/2017 10:49

Mine is very retroverted. When I needed an early scan it was transvaginal but by 12 weeks an external scan was fine.

I have a retroverted uterus and my 12 week scan was just a normal one with no problems. I think it makes it harder to see when you're only a few weeks pregnant, hence needing an internal scan at that point, but by 12 weeks it is much easier to see things.

I have a retroverted, heart shaped uterus. I had an internal scan at 7+3 and all others were abdominal. At 10 weeks it was still a bit difficult to get the measurements but they managed and we got a clear view eventually with a bit of manoeuvring on my part.
After 11-12 weeks your uterus should pop forward allowing a better view of your baby.
They always ask me to arch my back and put my fist on my tail bone for the earlier scans.

Thanks everyone - that's reassuring! Smile

By the way OP if you get up one morning and can't wee, go straight to hospital to be catheterised- happened to me and my sister, both with retroverted uteruses, at a certain stage of growth the uterus can sit on a tube and block it. Not very common I think but happened to both of us.

Has it happened to anyone else on here? I didn't realise there were so many of us with tilted uteruses (uterii?)

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 25/08/2017 16:38

Retro uterus - as I like to think of it - is actually pretty common. My GP said something like 5% of women. Dunno if that is right. Anyhow as others have said, it normally flips forward after the first tri or thereabouts. I had 5 totally normal abdominal scans with DD at 12, 13, 20, 33 and 37w.

thingymaboob · 25/08/2017 17:02

Mine is very retroverted but it had flipped by 12 week scan

Shortfatandangry · 25/08/2017 17:36

It was probably more to do with the skill of the sonographer than anything else tbh. I have a quite severely tilted uterus and sometimes I had to have internals and sometimes not. Wouldn't worry about it, the uterus corrects itself as the pregnancy progresses anyway due to weight of baby (so I was told anyway) and it's of no significance during pregnancy/labour. Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

Just remembered my dating scan at 13+1 also ended up being internal as he couldn't still get the nt measurements!

CL1982 · 25/08/2017 22:28

I went in at 6 weeks and had to have an internal but by 9 weeks was external and I have a retroverted uterus. I think it just depends on what your uterus is doing at the time :)
