What made you choose your pram

Possibly a little premature, as I'm only 11+4, but just curious to know how you all chose (or will choose) the pram you get.

I'm not looking to buy this second but I don't even know where I'd start when I do start looking. This is my first baby and it just seems there are so many options out there and so many brands so it's a bit of a daunting task.

Hello,

We've noticed this thread is quite old now, and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing prams and pushchairs, here's our round up of the best pushchairs on the market right now and what to look out for when buying one.

Hope that helps! Flowers

Baby Jogger does a buggy board which is compatible with the City Mini GT. It doesn't have great reviews, though!

BettyOBarley · 20/08/2017 21:15

The thing I found about the 3 in 1 travel system is if you have a big baby (DS was 9lb 1 and long) then they don't fit in the carrycot or car seat part for very long and then you're just left with a bulky pushchair.

I ended up selling mine when DS was about 4 or 5 months and getting a Babystyle Oyster Switch stroller which wasnt the best but but it does have a switchable seat for rear facing.

I've now swapped to a Gb Qbit stroller as I find a one handled stroller much easier to push while holding DD's hand and is slightly larger weight capacity.

Packergator · 20/08/2017 21:20

Was cheap and it had cupholders; I was the envy of many a harassed mum in Starbucks! Grin

abigailgabble · 20/08/2017 21:25

go to lots of shops and collapse them all as if you were putting them in your car - important and annoying task!

having a baby the key in my experience is having not enough hands. so you want a basket that is easily accessible. and some of them ---- they are not!!

mine is an uppababy vista and it's good (came into its own when i gave up on the carrycot when he was barely 3 months old and put the big boy seat on with padding).but it is LARGE and I'm v clumsy with it, although improving at 4 mo,

We went for the Quinny Speedi, which is a 3 wheeler. It covered my must-haves: swivel wheels at the front (fixed wheels are horrendous when you want to change direction), a bar that goes across rather than having 2 separate handles (a nightmare to push one-handed, when you hold an umbrella or your older child's hand), a buggy that comes with a carrycot and goes right down so that a baby can pretty much lie flat. Many parents seem to completely underestimate how important this is and ferry their babies around in car seats for hours!
Having said that, our Quinny did come with car seat adaptors, and I did make use of this in some situations, for short periods of time.
Lastly, we wanted there to be enough space for the older child to comfortably stand in between the carrycot or seat and the handle on a buggy board.
It ticked all the boxes, and collapsed easily as well Smile

abigailgabble · 20/08/2017 21:28

oh yes and babies hate having the sun in their eyes like, a lot (i did not know this to be a particular thing but maybe i am an idiot) so some form of shading that is built in is amazing (the vista had a great little pull down uv shield) (I'm not a salesperson i just really appreciate a lot of the thoughtful touches this buggy has)

tbqh i wouldn't get caught up with having a must have brand, they are a waste of money! i do like mine but i can't believe we paid that much for it. babies just tear through all the expensive shit you buy for them, I'm becoming very fond of the facebook marketplace now I'm getting over my PFB needs all brand new top end stuff thing!

Chickpearocker · 20/08/2017 21:59

Just a note about the nuna rebl car seat. There was a huge controversy over its safety earlier in the year and thousands of parents exchanged theirs. The company behaved pretty badly as well. If you search you can probably find my thread on it. It literally took me blood sweat and tears to get them to refund me after telling me to send the seat back. I really was disgusted.

I have an uppababy vista as I like walking, also a maclaren for shops etc.

Mummyh2016 · 20/08/2017 22:09

I have the mamas and papas ocarro. Things we took into consideration were budget, look, how easy it was to fold and would it fit in the car.

Serafinaaa · 20/08/2017 22:30

There were some concerns over the Nuba rebl safety but they've brought out a new version now. I exchanged my old one for the new one with no problems whatsoever.

TheWeeWitch · 20/08/2017 22:42

Baby jogger city mini here. Bought it because of the darned amazing one handed folding action, the compact size when folded and the fact that it is suitable from newborn to 3/4yo.

TheWeeWitch · 20/08/2017 22:43

Oh yes - and the big hood for making loads of shade.

KatnissMellark · 20/08/2017 22:53

I've got the mountain buggy urban jungle. Wanted a buggy I could run with but also use day to day. It's great, massive but very manueverable. Large wheels, suspension, hand brake, bottle holder, leash- everything you need to run with but suitable for every day. Parent and forward facing, birth to 4+. Car seat compatible. Can add a scooter/buggy board for when number 2 arrives. Love it! Suits my lifestyle and hobbies.

RedLemonade · 20/08/2017 23:03

I went for the baby jogger city mini GT because my sister's friend, who is a mum of three, told me that was agreed to be the best in her large circle of mum friends. And because I had texted her in desperation for advice having overwhelmed myself online with buggy choices at about your stage of pregnancy!

No regrets. Great buggy.

IBurnToast · 20/08/2017 23:12

Another vote for the baby jogger city mini. Love the one hand fold, machine washable seat is amazing and it is really sturdy.
Just wish they'd brought out the pram a few years earlier so all of mine could have used it - only had it for the third from birth, he was in it just over six months, whereas first child was a year before I bought it and second one went in a pram then the baby jogger from six months.
If you want parent facing there's a new baby jogger which allows that option too. Worth checking out.

MrsPandaBear · 20/08/2017 23:59

I have the buggy board for the Babyjogger City Mini GT (as it also fits our other pushchair). The reason it doesn't get good reviews is it is essentially unusable - there's no where for the child on the boards head to go, particularly if you have the seat reclined. Other than that and the basket, it is a great pushchair though - it fits folded up in the boot of my tiny car. I was also told we'd move on to an umbrella stroller buy never have - having got used to how easy the Babyjogger is to steer one handed I'd never go back.

EssentialHummus · 21/08/2017 02:32

Same Cosatto as sane, for the same reasons. What finally pushed me into buying was finding it for sale at near-enough half price. Everyone in my neighbourhood seems to have a Bugaboo or iCandy, and I got a bit cynical towards both brands as a result.

Wineandchoccy · 21/08/2017 04:01

We bought the silver cross pioneer easy to push, huge shopping basket, cosy carry cot DD was in it until 6 months, it is heavy to lift in and out of the car but no different to a lot of others we tried. We bought ours from the silver cross outlet shop in Bradford.
We had the sc car seat which was great if they were asleep and you needed to nip somewhere DD was in it until 12 months then we got the nuna rebl seat which we took back after the issues and swapped for a Britax Romer 360 spin which I prefer it is so easy to turn and DD seems a lot comfier in it.
Good luck there are so many lovely ones to choose from

Newbiecat · 21/08/2017 04:53

I'm on my 3rd DC and my Bugaboo cameleon (2) has lasted so well! I bought a new fabric set on eBay and replaced the brake cable ( well, the local bike shop did!) for £5 and it's great, unlike some copycat designs (uppababy is one I can think of) the carrycot is a decent width & length and my 3 lasted 5-6 months in it. It also got them used to sleeping flat on their backs I'm sure.
It is easy to steer, never had a puncture (gel filled tyres) and you get great resale value on eBay. We bought sand/snow wheels as extra too- v useful.
When DC2 came along we bought a baby jogger city mini as a second. Like others on here I love the one hand fold, big seat and it does recline flat tho I wouldn't put a newborn in it personally as the seat sort of suspends when in recline position and wouldn't be as supportive or warm for s newborn,

ladybunnikins · 21/08/2017 07:41

I bought mine before I was even pregnant, the price was so good on amazon at the time that I thought I could always sell it if I couldn't get pregnant. I got the baby jogger versa gt and I have been very happy with it.
Things to decide:
Do you want parent facing?
Does it need to be suitable from birth or will you use a sling/carrier initially?
Do you use public transport/have a lot of stairs to your property (so something lightweight/easy fold)
Will it fit in the car? Do you want it to be car seat compatible? (Agree with getting a fixed, 0-4 swivel seat instead)
Are you planning a short age gap between children? (So something that can be converted into a tandem maybe)
Urban or country use?
Height of you and your partner? (Some have much better handle heights)
Do you fly a lot?

There is a pushchair section on mumsnet that I found useful and good reviews with pictures on Bestbuggy.

blackcherries · 21/08/2017 07:45

mrspandabear Yes I was set to get the baby jogger city mini but preferred something more flexible in terms of parent/ world facing. Got mama's and papas urbo2 as lightweight and flexible. You can compare weight specifications but really important to have a go in the shops particularly collapsing/ putting them together! Urbo2 has a crap basket though!

Sweetpotatoaddict · 21/08/2017 07:53

What made me pick my pram was the carrycot section is suitable for overnight sleeping, made overnight trips very easy in the first few months. No need to think about a travel cot. The giant basket also swayed my decision.

Llogan2016 · 21/08/2017 08:04

Hi. I like your partner have a bad back and hip problems. I've just purchased the joie 360 car seat. Then for my pushchair I went for the mamas and papas sola as it is small and light weight. We both have small cars so this was part of the reason I chose it. I did go for whole travel system so my husband and mum can use the spare car seat. My advise would be go somewhere like toys r us and have a go with them. They were happy for us to try them all out. Hope that helps!

NC1990 · 21/08/2017 09:14

We have the iCandy Orange. Initially I wanted the Peach but the Orange is new out this year and has (imo) better features such as a much larger canopy, a gate-opening bumper bar and an integrated buggy board. It also converts to a tandem should we ever need one and folds down in one. It's not the smallest pram but is surprisingly compact given how sturdy it is. We have it in grey but I'm tempted to buy a pink canopy to jazz it up a bit!

My SIL has the UppaBaby Vista and she's really pleased with it, I believe they are very popular in the US (where she lives). I was also really, really tempted by the Silver Cross Wave, it's a really lovely looking pram and seems practical too (costs a fortune though 😬).

What made you choose your pram
Roundandroundtheapartment · 21/08/2017 09:30

Definitely look for a one fold especially if your husband has back problems, we had a pram that I absolutely loved to push around, ticked all the boxes BUT I had to take it apart to put it down and it was such a pita when I just wanted to get out quickly!
I bought an umbrella fold when dc was 1 and it's so much easier

BoredOnMatLeave · 21/08/2017 09:55

Another here with the Silver Cross Pioneer. Knew when I was pregnant I wanted a Silver cross as every baby in our family has had one, its a brand I trust. Absolutely fell in love with the Eton Grey so got that.

Pros:
Sturdy and pushes well in city and in countryside
Comfortable for baby and for you pushing
Good handle height (6ft4 DP)
Looks beautiful
Huge basket

Cons:
Carrycot is small, but DD wanted to be more upright by about 3 months anyway
When carrycot is on you couldn't get into the basket.
It is big and take up almost the whole boot of our Peugeot 3008.
Can't collapse in 1 when its parent facing.

I would still buy it again though.

I would reconsider you car seat idea as a newborn car seat is useful in early days when you don't want to wake them but just need to nip into supermarket to grab milk etc.
