Accidentally drank from same glass as cat

I am freaked! Visited a friend yesterday and left my glass of squash in one room whilst we had lunch in the other room for a couple of hours. Just before I left I collected my bag from living room and drunk the squash from the glass I left in there. Their two cats had been in and out of there so there's no way of knowing if they drunk from glass. Worried about toxoplasmosis as they lick their bums and paws after being outside. Am I worrying over nothing?

Yes Smile

Penfold007 · 20/08/2017 09:44

The cats will be fine 😀

dementedpixie · 20/08/2017 09:44

Do cats even drink squash? Mine prefer pond water

You will be fine

SheSaidHeSaid · 20/08/2017 09:59

Don't worry, you and the cats so be fine.

dippypanda · 20/08/2017 10:34

My two cats just love a glass a squash, especially on hot days... Wink

thingymaboob · 20/08/2017 10:36

@dippypanda would you be worried if you accidentally drunk from the glass and were pregnant?

Hang on, hang on, did you see the cats drinking the squash? If you actually saw them drinking the squash I'd be extremely worried and want take them to the emergency vet straight away. Have you told your friend that her cats might have drunk some squash? You need to tell her RIGHT NOW

LottieDoubtie · 20/08/2017 10:41

No not remotely, don't stress it OP

Foggymist · 20/08/2017 10:42

So you don't even know that a cat did drink of it? I wouldn't worry at all, even if a cat did drink out of it nothing will happen, but it's not even definite that one did...

QueenNefertitty · 20/08/2017 10:43

This is pregnancy paranoia. Very normal. I had it in spades. You'll be fine. Honestly. I'd give you a list of what I worried about, but don't want to trigger you.

Please please let this go though. Even if they did drink from your glass- which I doubt they did- The chances that you have toxoplasmosis are vanishingly small.

LittleBearPad · 20/08/2017 10:43

You'll be fine.

I doubt the cats have a Robinson's habit.

Perfectly1mperfect · 20/08/2017 10:44

No, I wouldn't be worried....and I worry about lots of things especially when pregnant. The cats will not have drank squash from your glass. But even if they did you don't get toxoplasmosis from their saliva.

Cats lick themselves, then rub up against things, yet not everything they rub against has toxoplasmosis on it as everyone would get it.

Seriously, there's nothing to worry about. x

thingymaboob · 20/08/2017 10:45

I didn't see them drink the squash. A glass of squash was left in the same room as them and I was worried that they might have contaminated the water with their poo-licking mouth and then I've drunk it and been exposed to toxoplasmosis. Is squash harmful to cats? I've had cats all my life and I've never heard of it being harmful to cats. My cats once had suspected lily poisoning so I thought I was up together with what was harmful to cats. I told my friend that I was worried that they might have drunken it and she said she didn't think they'd be interested in it as they are not interested in drinking from glasses. Obviously there's no way to be sure as we weren't in the room...

You'll be fine. This is bonkers.

Scrumptiousbears · 20/08/2017 10:46

OP it's going to be a massively long pregnancy for you if you worry about random stuff like this.

QueenNefertitty · 20/08/2017 10:47

Wow okay- I think maybe from your last post you might possibly be experiencing some anxiety issues. I mean that kindly, not in a snide way.

Do you have racing thoughts, or lots of worries like this that you can't dismiss, OP?

BaronessBomburst · 20/08/2017 10:50

If you've had cats all your life you've probably already been exposed to toxoplasmosis so will have the antibodies already. You'll be fine.

Luncharmstrong · 20/08/2017 10:51

You are being ridiculous ! Is this a pregnancy thing or are you always like this ? If so please seek help.

QueenNefertitty · 20/08/2017 10:53

@lunch - I don't think calling an OP who is clearly showing some signs of anxiety "ridiculous" is helpful. Especially not as you acknowledge in your post she may need some support. Did you meant to be so rude?

StarHeartDiamond · 20/08/2017 10:53

Google toxoplasmosis and how you catch it to put your mind at rest op. (I was similarly worried in pg). From memory (hazy!) you have to come into direct contact with actual cat poo that's a certain amount of time old, from a cat that has it (not all do) and even then you have to have a means of it entering your body and even then you might not actually catch it. Something like that.

I was so worried I had the mw do a toxoplasmosis test with the rest of my bloods. It came back negative (I've never had the infection) despite growing up with cats, living with 2 cats through pregnancy, cats always slept on the bed etc, and during childhood and teens and 20s nut having a clue about cat poo and toxoplasmosis so I hadnt been looking to avoid it.

ElizabethShaw · 20/08/2017 10:53

If you have cats you're probably immune to toxoplasmosis by now anyway.

SheSaidHeSaid · 20/08/2017 11:02

This might be a bit gross but my cats properly snuggle up to my face, they kind of sleep on my chest when I'm on the sofa, they rub their faces on my face too but I'm not even remotely worried. It didn't occur to me to be worried if I'm honest.

thingymaboob · 20/08/2017 11:03

@ElizabethShaw I'm not immune.
I have always been worried about it since the beginning of pregnancy. It is a bit of a fixation!
I actually know loads about toxoplasmosis. It does seem a stretch to catch it in this way but I guess my train of thought was:

  1. cat grubs around in contaminated soil (they are outside cats)
  2. cat licks paws which have been in soil
  3. cat drinks squash
  4. I drink squash
