thrush in pregnancy

Sorry a bit gross but I have thrush and may be pg (not sure yet) and was told at Boots that I can't use any treatment (Cannesten pessaries or creams) if I might be pg. What then am I supposed to do? Suffer in silence? Does anyone know any natural remedies? Yogurt hasn't worked - anything else?
Thank you!

Go to the docs and they will prescribe you something suitable for pregnancy. They might also offer you a pg test at the same time!

snipersmum · 30/03/2007 17:15

defo go to the doc and get them to swab not just to treat- I did this by accident as the thrush wouldn't go away and it turned out it wasn't thrush at all, but Group B strep - much safer now I know I have it, as is baby.

lavender oil in bath worked for me, as did washing all pants in 90 degree wash and then steaming the crotches to death with the iron. Sudocrem also eased things a bit.

Princesspowersparkle · 30/03/2007 17:22

I found that cool baths worked for a while- and then not rubbing the area dry when getting out. Not pleasant but it gave me some relief.
Hope you get it sorted soon. x

Here's what I did after advice from my fab midwives. I'd tried canesten etc and it didn't work so .... peel a clove of garlic, drop a few drops of tea tree oil into it, thread it thorugh with a piece of cotton for easy retrieval, put it up your fanjo overnight. Voila, goodbye thrush.

You then need to make sure it doesn't come back by starving it of food eg yeast (bread) and sugar. Also dried fruit etc has spores on and needs to be avoided. You may well crave these things but be strong and don't feed the thrush.

This really worked for me and it was a blessed relief.

lazyemma · 30/03/2007 19:05

the canestan pessary and cream is safe to use in pregnancy, but I'm intrigued by this garlic-clove-up-fanjo idea!

lou031205 · 30/03/2007 19:12

just to second that, I have had 2 bouts of thrush since falling pregnant - never had it before that - and both times was prescribed the canesten 2% cream with 500mg pessary.

Only advice for pregnancy is that you dont use the applicator to position the pessary, but you do it with a finger, like a tampon.

That being said, I did use the applicator with no issues.

Rantum · 30/03/2007 19:16

and wear the loosest clothes that you have - nothing tight - make sure your knickers are cotton not synthetic. no perfumes etc. -

Mrsjaffabiffa · 30/03/2007 19:24

Just to back it up. Canesten cream and the pessary are safe in pregnancy. All chemists HAVE to say they can not advise it with out a dr as it says on the instructions if you are pregnant consult your dr before use. I used it from 6weeks pregnant with dd, had so many pessarys. It was just something that troubled me in my 2nd pregnancy. I am now 33weeks pg with no.3 and have only had one bout of thrush at 11 weeks this time.

I don't know if you are a swimmer, but we live in France and have a pool in the Garden so I was swimming everyday. Both my GP and my MW told me to stay out of the water as Chlorine feeds the bacteria.

Snipersmum - If you are still looking on this thread, can I ask you about the group b strep? I also have it but didn't realise until I had numerous tests with my last pregnany when I lost the baby at 21 wks (it wasn't related to group b strep, that was just one of the results I received).

I'm pregnant again (23wks) and have had what I think is thrush for weeks. I've been using the cream but this doesn't really make it go away. Did you have thrush like symptoms that were related to Group B strep? Some of the things I've read say its symptiomless, but I'm starting to wonder if I dont have thrush at all... Thanks!

snipersmum · 30/03/2007 20:41

Hi Chooster. Yes, I had unbearable itching which I assumed was thrush, and when the first treatment didn't help, I went back to the midwife, who on the GP's advice gave me a swab, and they found a very heavy (their words) colonisation of Group B Strep, and said that from the amount I had they were pretty sure I had had it for a long time. I was very upset at first, but am now reassured that when I go into labour that it is treatable with IV antibiotics. I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your baby. If I can give any more info, please shout.

Chooster · 30/03/2007 21:19

Thanks for getting back to me snipersmum - Its interesting to hear that this itching could be something other than thrush. THANKS!! And good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

skidaddle · 02/04/2007 15:56

Hi, thanks everyone - am seeing the doc today - got a second bfp on test so must be pg

so looks like i have to ask the doc and he will prescribe me what i could buy over the counter anyway?! Very logical.

Might try the garlic up the fanjo thing though although can imagine it doesn't smell too pretty - bad enough on breath but coming out of fanny... [puking emotion]

I had thrush during first two pregnancies and treated it sucessfully with canesten. My third baby was born in Singapore where they routinely test for group b strep. I tested positive and was treated with antibiotics whilst in labour. I got a real shock when I tested positive but as already mentioned much safer for baby and for you once its known about.

Singapore · 02/04/2007 16:27

Meant to say I wish I had known about the garlic trick! Mind you i generally use very lazy garlic and that might not have done the trick!

Pheebe · 02/04/2007 17:53

I had canestan cream and pessary prescribed during late pregnancy. At the very least the cream will relieve the soreness and itching til you can double check re the pessary with your doc. try ringing NHS direct, failing that check out where your local emergency docs are or nip into the local ER and get a doc there to check you over
