Out and about with newborn

Is it safe to take a newborn out and about after 1-2 weeks? Just wondering if we can take our new DC to the airport to greet incoming family at arrivals. The drive is about 30 mins each way. Or is that not advisable / overly ambitious??

Only firstborns are ever this precious.

so patronising. my DD referred to in my previous post is my second and DP's 4th child. I wouldn't take a week old baby on an unnecessary car journey of that length to an airport (if there is traffic it could end up being longer than 30 mins) for the sake of meeting visitors. there's a difference between taking a baby 'out and about' to strapping them into a car seat and taking them on a unnecessary car journey.

If you feel up to it go for it. I had a short and straight forward birth and left the hospital a few hours later. The next day we went out to lunch and a little bit of light shopping and were out and about everyday of husbands paternity leave with numerous lunches and dinners out. When he was 3 weeks old he had a business trip a short flight away so we went with him as it was the kind of trip where he would have a lot of spare time and we had a brilliant time. He was easy on the flight and seemed to love going out and about. I loved that stage as he was so portable and easy. When they are toddling about and in a routine everything becomes a bit more difficult so make the most of it!

No not patronising, realistic. It does tend to be firstborn and occasionally second borns who get handled with kid gloves. Later siblings do have to just slot in. Ours 4/5/6 had a 35 minute drive each way to nursery three times a week to drop off older ones. Meant they napped in the car rather than having to be put down in a cot. After first one or two you can't put everyone's life on hold for the baby.
