I know the internet is full of information, but i do love a good old fashioned book.
Any recommendations for a newbie (6wks).
Thanks

What sort of thing are you looking for? I love the Positive Birth Book by Milli Hill, How to Grow a baby & push it out by Clemmie Hooper and I'm just about to start Happy Mum Happy Baby by Giovanna Fletcher as that was recommended to me. Xxxx

nothing too complicated, just something that explains what is going to happen.

I got my hubby Dad's guide to pregnancy (one of those for dummies guides) it's obviously for dad's but has a fuck load of information and clear chapters :-) xxx

I really enjoyed the Best Friend's Guide To Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine - it made me laugh and made me feel I wasn't alone in all the weird ways I was feeling:

Anti-rec: I hated, really hated What To Expect When You Are Expecting, which some people seem to view as a classic. It made me feel so inadequate, a bad mother before I'd even become a mother at all, and I would not recommend it at all to anyone. I even destroyed my copy rather than put it in the Oxfam bag - something I have never done with any other book, ever - because I didn't want it to make any other woman feel terrible.

How to grow a baby & push it out would be a good one then, it's a week by week, stage by stage guide. It's written by a midwife so lots of great information but also fun to read. I enjoyed reading the whole book when I got it, and now go back and read through the bits relating to which stage I'm at now. Hope that helps xxx

If you want something about what to expect in early weeks/months with a newborn (rather than about pregnancy) I'd really recommend Your Baby: Week by Week by Simone Cave and Dr Caroline Fertleman. I'm reading it at the moment to prepare for arrival of DC1 in a few weeks and it's great at just explaining in plain English what you can 'typically' (if I can use that word!) expect from each week after birth, with chapters broken down into sleeping, feeding, play/development, and 'what's happening to mum'. Obviously I can't say yet how accurate it is but it was recommended to me by a number of mum friends and I've found it really interesting and informative.

I liked Expecting Better which was recommended on here for understanding the research behind the many rules/guidelines. Was given the Rough Guide but found it a bit annoying, I prefer something that just gives facts rather than trying to be funny.

Going to look at some of the recommendations for new baby books now so thanks for starting this!

I am really enjoying DKs the day by day pregnancy book. DH and I read each day together before bed.

If you are interested in reading a book about what to do once the baby is here in terms of routine etc, I really enjoyed The Baby Whisperer.
