Pregnant and Studying...

Hello GrinI registered to start my ACCA in June of this year. My work is supporting me but are allowing me to take as long as I like to complete all the exams. I don’t work in accounts yet. I started studying extensively for my first exam and aimed to get at least 2 completed by the end of this year. I am now 6 weeks pregnant and have not had the energy or even will power to study. All I want to do is go home and sleep and even before this I was so busy with work, OH etc. revision just went down the drain!

I don’t want to give up! – I am aiming to sit at least 1 exam before Christmas. Any tips for studying while pregnant?

I am thinking of waiting till my first trimester is over and even getting some exams under my belt while I am on maternity leave…?

I was the same I finished my
Second year at uni whilst I was in my first trimester with loads of deadlines it was really hard and I felt like giving up with how poorly and tired I felt but I just had to make the most of what I could do although I did get a couple of extensions but I got through it! Now iv got to think about getting through my final year with a newborn (bad timing)! I think you will find you will feel better in your second trimester with more energy so make the most of it while you can. It's hard but you will do it Flowers

I am currently studying my level 3 AAT and 7 weeks pregnant, my motivation has gone out of the window, both in work and studying. It isn't like my job is demanding but I am constantly tired with little or no appetite!
I was thinking the same, doing my exams whilst on maternity leave but unsure how easy that will be!
The thing that's keeping me revising is it will be worth it once the babies here and make it a better start in life!
Good luck & Congratulations x

I just finished my final year of my undergrad while pregnant & working, it was really bloody hard!

I have to say the first trimester seemed the hardest in terms of tiredness and nausea, second was much much better. Third is obviously hard work BUT being obviously pregnant people give you a bit more leeway.

I found ways of coping were:-

  • if you set timers for studying and have something relaxing to do at the end. E.g. I had an exam to study for so I'd set a timer counting down from 60 minutes, then when the alarm went off I'd have something to eat and watch an episode of something on netflix. Then repeat.
  • get extensions and don't be afraid to ask for them. If you get really sick or tired, go to the doctor and ask to get signed off work, health comes first!
  • spend time studying somewhere inspiring, I liked the garden or the library where there were no distractions
  • eat healthily, it can be tempting to eat loads of carbs and sugar but you'll feel sluggish after
  • get enough sleep, nap if necessary
  • vitamin C was THE BEST. Try eating lots of oranges or getting some of those dissolving ones to put in water. Similarly iron - make sure you get enough.

Good luck x

Congrats on your pregnancy!
I did ACCA many years ago before I was pregnant.
But started CTA and sat my first exam when I was 7 months pregnant.
I didn't find it that hard as I was still pretty active at that time.

I then took a break and sat my next exam when my son was 9 months. I found it okay as baby was pretty good at that stage.

I fell pregnant again and sadly miscarried and had the surgery option 1 months before my next exam. I was still okay as I had to really focus on getting through the exams so that made me cope better than I would otherwise have done. I infact did very well and scored highly.

I have two papers left and my son is now 1.5 years almost and I find it really hard to study as he doesn't sleep until 9 and at that time I find it hard to study after working all day. My exam is in November.

You can do it, good luck! Make sure you get plenty of rest and what works for me is being super organised. One of my colleagues recently started doing ACCA and she says the first 3 papers aren't that hard to get through so hopefully you sail through them!
