Gro Egg

So we picked up a Gro Egg room thermometer yesterday and decided to try it out.

We put it in our room as baby will joining us in there and while we found the room very comfortable the thermometer shot to red and read 24+° ... It most definitely did not feel that warm, and we had the window open. We slept with duvets etc.

I've been testing it today and in order to vet the damn thing to even go orange (little warm) I have to have all the windows in the bedroom open, the door open and fan on. To get it to have a smiley face (optimal temp) I have to put it on the open windowsill... While I'm sat with fluffy slippers etc on.

So my question is, how reliable are these things? We bought on impluse as it was on sale.

We have one, we actually think it's not very reliable but the damn thing is still plugged in...

Orangebird69 · 09/08/2017 11:09

I bought one but soon 'gifted' it. I don't think a baby should be sleeping in an icebox. Which is apparently what the Gro company think!

Sluttybartfast · 09/08/2017 11:11

Throw the damn thing out; they're overpriced and useless. You can get better more accurate thermometers cheaper that don't stress you out by acting like NUCLEAR MELTDOWN is about to occur because a room is at 23C.

Just get a normal room thermometer (we have a Tesco one shaped like a hippo you can also use in the bath) and adjust clothes and bedclothes for baby if it's warm/cool in the room.

OnNaturesCourse · 09/08/2017 11:20

Yeah, they seem to think baby should be in a cold room and wrapped up a lot but I'd rather have a warm room with light bedclothes etc if that makes sense?

Totally pointless. You can tell from walking into a room if it feels hot/cold - and it will feel freezing it will do if you try to keep your gro egg on side. Someone bought us one and we soon realised our baby was waking at night because he was fucking freezing!

Need20yearsofsleep · 09/08/2017 12:08

We have one it goes mental sometimes going from blue to red to orange Hmm I just use it for the night light for ds. I got a little thermometer off the midwife when I had him which I still use

farfarawayfromhome · 09/08/2017 12:16

i love ours but then i'm quite into temperatures - i live in a very hot country. i pay no attention to the colour- it's the number i'm interested in. 23-24 is prefect for us and recommended in the country we live in.

Ours has never, ever glowed green!

HandbagFan · 09/08/2017 12:23

DS is 18m old and I've never plugged ours in!

Honestly you know by the feel of the room whether to put him in pjs, bodysuit, vest, sleeping bag or none of the above! Just take care not to overheat them.

liquidrevolution · 09/08/2017 12:27

Pointless. Most baby monitors have temps on anyhow.

Lou573 · 09/08/2017 12:43

I used ours religiously when dd was a newborn, and in hindsight we spent far too many nights unnecessarily cold (me included as I coslept so no duvet). I haven't used it in a long time and only know the temperature now as it's inbuilt on the monitor - 24 degrees at the moment at night and toddler is going to sleep in vest, pjs and blanket.

RhinoGirl · 09/08/2017 12:44

Ours said 19.8 with a smiley face last night and it was bloody freezing.

Pinkjellybeans · 09/08/2017 12:53

We just used ours as a nightlight when ds went in his own room. He now has a 'growclock' (this literally is a life saver!!) And ds2 will soon gain the night light

Bobbiepin · 09/08/2017 12:55

They are known to be unreliable. If you can, take it back and get a refund. Have you got a portable thermostat or a smart meter type thing that can give you the temp? We're planning on having the thermostat in whatever room baby is in (likely to be living room or our room to start) and a preset temp on there so its constant. Either way, feel baby's back to check how warm they are, if cold put another layer on, if warm or sweaty take one off.

OnNaturesCourse · 09/08/2017 14:16

Our thermostat is on the hall wall which is always warmer as has no out facing walls, whoever built the house was clearly clueless.

Our monitor doesn't have a reading either. I will just use it as a night light and read the numbers. I'm happy with it glowing orange...we got it for next to nothing at a baby event so almost pointless getting a refund. Xx

I found mine to be inaccurate compared to a normal room thermometer, so i eventually gave up. I also didn't find it bright enough for a night light. I only used a thermometer in the couple of weeks after delivery because my sense of temperature was really off (may have been the epidural) and when it is really hot. The avent dual bath room thermometer did the job very well and is quite cheap and compact

Lou573 · 09/08/2017 22:28

Not the avent bath one that looks like a little flower - two of those went so foggy on me you couldn't see the display. Tesco version was a third of the price and has so far lasted three times as long.
