What to wash baby clothes with?

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice please! I'm currently 32 weeks with my first baby and have almost got everything together. I'm going to start washing baby's clothes soon but I wasn't sure what to wash them with.

A lady I used to babysit recommended using the ecozone soap nuts as they are gentle but they look a bit faffy. I'd love to know what other people have used as I assume you need to use something quiet gentle?
Also should I tumble dry them? Or use fabric softener?

Thanks in advance!

I used Fairy liquid detergent, switched to powder when DD was about 4. No fabric conditioner. I think tumble drier is fine as long as you don't use anything in it.

It's often the perfume in these things that causes the irritation, that as well as bleach (AFAIK Fairy liquid doesn't contain bleach but the powder does have some).

Thanks @RiverTam. Is the fairy stuff gentle? I wand tsurenif I had to get non-bio or something organic so I wasn't just adding more chemicals -mum guilt already setting in-

I use an eco egg for all my laundry with fairy fabric conditioner so just used that for baby too , i have very sensitive skin but none of my babies have had particularly sensitive skin so i just use what is ok for me

I use normal bio washing powder (whatever is on offer) and fabric conditioner. Baby never had a rash though i appreciate some have more sensitive skin. I wouldn't panic over getting expensive brands etc. Maybe non bio is best though

If you truly want less chemicals the ecozone or ecoball are great suggestions

Ooh brill thanks for the ecoballs suggestion. Hadn't heard of them before and they look perfect.

Thanks everyone!

I didn't wash anything until it was worn (just in case I had to take stuff back and swap for different sizes...and because I didn't really see the point) then just bunged stuff in with the rest of our clothes so it got washed in Aldi bio liquid. Never had an issue.

Fairy non bio liquid and fabric softener here. DD has sensitive and eczema prone skin and we've never had any issues with it.

Blondefancy · 09/08/2017 13:44

We just wash clothes in the exact same format that we do our own, same conditioner same powder..😊 If the baby has different product to us a) it'll cost more and b) we'll have to keep on buying different product forever cus that'll be what she's used to (that's the way I look at it anyway😂)

RiverTam · 09/08/2017 13:49

Fairy is more gentle, yes. DD had mild eczema as a baby, as many do. When she was a toddler I switched to a non-bio and she came out in a rash immediately.

I have to say, after using Fairy for years now, I find most other detergents have a really overpowering scent. I've actually found myself wheezing in someone else's bed from the reek from the bedding!

It's on offer quite frequently as well.

2ducks2ducklings · 09/08/2017 14:10

We've always used whichever non bio is on offer and I've used fabric softener too.

YellowLawn · 09/08/2017 14:11

whatever you usually use is just fine.
bio powder washes best.
long cycle with proper rinse.

GimbleInTheWabe · 09/08/2017 18:53

Good point about always having to buy two separate detergents @Blondefancy! Will def bear that in mind.
And since most of you have said it doesn't really matter what you wash it in I might just do them in what I already use (whatever was on deal that week!) and just not use any fabric conditioner. And then if he has sensitive skin I can always try a different/more gentle brand.

Thanks for all the advice.
