My cycle is 34 days - does that effect my due date??

Just had a thought - as you do. I'm due with my first on May 27th. Now this date has been taken from the first day of my cycle back in August last year (Aug 18th) and according to my 12 week scan the measurements matched up to that.

However, my cycle is a long one...34 days and I was just wondering whether that means I'll be due any earlier or later as a result. As you can tell I'm crap at maths as well so haven't been able to fathom reason out of it.

Any thoughts, advice are most welcome...thanks

I'm interested to see if anybody can offer any solid knowledge on this as we had a big discussion about it when I booked in with the mw. My cycle is 21 (ish) days but my 12 weeks scan matches up with the figures they gave me based on my LMP...

Sooooooo confusing!

Karmamother · 28/03/2007 21:57

Congrats. Usually, if you have a longer than 28days cycle then your pregnancy can be slightly longer. However, if your 12 wk scan gave you a 12wk gestation then you should have the usual 40wk pregnancy. They're fairly accurate. Anyway, baby can arrive 2 wks either side of your EDD so I wouldn't worry too much. HTH

Lio · 28/03/2007 21:58

HI cinnamontam, yes I have heard it could make your EDD later - if it gets to the time and you go late, if you don't want to be induced read up in advance - 'Your Birth Right' by Pat Thomas is great. Congrats, btw

kellogs · 28/03/2007 21:59

Hi cinnamontam
Scans are a waste of time cos everytime you have one they change the dates.
My cyle is about the same as yours & my last period was 26th august but the scan put me at 9th june then next scan said 2nd june now my 3rd scan says 9th again.
However all my bumps measurements are off the scale so i'm hoping the've got the dates wrong & it's born earlier.

cinnamontam · 28/03/2007 22:00

Hmmm...thanks Karma. I did think if the measurements said that date then I hopefully wouldn't be weeks longer than anticipated.

PLP - sounds like you and I need to sit down with a cuppa and see what others have to say. Biscuit?

PLP, I guess it also depends on when you conceived during your cycle. Conventional wisdom states that in a 28 day cycle you are fertile around the 14th day, give or take a few days. As many woman will tesify, you can get PG at anytime in your cycle!! I conceived on day 6 of my regular 26 day cycle which was then reflected in my 12wk scan. I was lucky enough to know when I fell pg so it wasn't a surprise to find I was a week ahead, IYSWIM.

cinnamontam · 28/03/2007 22:02

Thanks for the congrats I have all kinds of family arriving from Australia around my due date and I would much prefer to be wallowing at home with Bean and hanging out with them then wallowing at home with them and a massive belly!!

Yummy, yes please! (not ginger though lol!)

Also, I've heard that the sperm can stay around for a while before the actual conception takes place. My LMP was 16th August and I know for a fact that we conceived on Boxing Day but I've been told that the sperm could have stayed around for a few days before actually doing anything - amazing!!!

Both my DS and DD were born 8 days late - when I told the mw this, she said that would make sense if I have a 21 day cycle. That confused me even more!

Sod the biscuits - how about some cake!?

PurpleLostPrincess · 28/03/2007 22:06

Sorry, 16th December - pg brain!

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 28/03/2007 22:08

OK. In theory your due date will be date of conception plus 38 weeks.

For a 28 week cycle it is normally 2 weeks between 1st day of last period and ovulation (therefore conception) so you add 2 weeks onto 38 giving 40.

For a 35 day cycle (like mine) it is normally assumed that ovulation(& conception) takes place 3 weeks after the first day of last period - so you should add an extra week on.

This is all based upon the assumption that a woman will bleed 14 days after ovulation (day 14 of a 28 day cycle; day 21 of a 35 day cycle). However there has been more recent evidence sugesting that ovulation can actually take place over a much wider range of days (I think it was something like day 6-22) - making the rhythm method of contraception quite unreliable unless you know your cycle v well and affecting EDDs. For this reason I think that they tend to prefer to use scan determined dates.

My scan dates (which are usually regarded to be more accurate) actually came out between EDD calculated based on 28 or 35 week cycle. I gave birt 2 days before EDD...

Cake it is. I have chocolate and lemon. Have a slice of both

I also have a 34 day cycle (although not now I'm bfing hahahahah). My pregnancy lasted 43+5 by my calculations and was ended when I got pre-eclampsia. My MW didn't think it'd make a difference.

cinnamontam · 28/03/2007 22:14

Ok - well I either conceived on the 19th or 22nd day of my cycle then

kellogs · 28/03/2007 22:15

i don't want him born in june i want him before then i'm fed up with walking like a duck, not sleeping. well i'll settle for 38 weeks but after that i'm turning to hot curries & copious amounts of nookie see if that will shift him

cinnamontam · 28/03/2007 22:17

I started thinking about this cause I definitely don't want to be induced so good know I have a bit more time up my sleeves if I need it. To be honest, unless they can prove Bean is in distress or placenta is degrading I'll fight them off with sticks

Kellogs. I told my Mum and DH that on the day she steps off the plane from Oz I'll be on a strict regime of curry, pineapple, walking and sex. They both looked scared

Good for you - not turning up for appointments works to and patting the consultant on the head and saying 'ahh aren't you sweet to worry - see ya next week' and running away giggling worked for me.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 28/03/2007 22:18

I think going overdue is the only time it really matters....

PurpleLostPrincess · 28/03/2007 22:20

I'll stick to the chocolate thanks, lemon gives me heartburn at the moment!

That's very interesting SlightlyMadSpringBunny, sounds like you know what you're talking about! I have to admit, I had to read your post a few times before I really understood it (I'm blonde as well as pg!).

So, regardless of when we conceived, we're still pg for the same amount of time aren't we? It all seems to be a case of figuring out when conception took place rather than anything else. You wouldn't believe this is my third child would you?!

My question if that is the case, is how come they say we're pregnant for 9 months when 40 weeks isn't the equivalent of 9 months? (if there are generally 4 weeks in a month on average, 9 months = 36 weeks?).

(sorry if that sounds confrontational, it really isn't meant that way).

cinnamontam · 28/03/2007 22:20

Ohhhh I like the head patting. DH is 6 foot 8 so might get him to do that. I reckon that should scare them off

kellogs · 28/03/2007 22:24

my friend said about pineapple i'll give that a try in a few weeks. i've decided i'm having no more babies i've done my bit for mankind i'm getting sterilised this time (caught on the pill with this one HUGE surprise)
anyone elose at the i've had enough stage i want it over with?

kellogs · 28/03/2007 22:27

i know 40 weeks is 10 mths!!! why do we put ourselves trough it, i think that in the future a scientist should find a way so that men can get pregnant instead of women

cinnamontam · 28/03/2007 22:32

Oh good lord can you imagine the whinging?? No thanks. I think the world is much better off if us women stick to the growing and birthing bit.

Good luck Kellogs. I'll keep an eye out for your birth announcement. Why don't we both shoot for May 30th?

OP posts:
kellogs · 28/03/2007 22:40

yeah that sounds reasonable
i couldn't really see my other half having a baby he moaned when hehad flu!! kept going on about it being "manflu" which is worse than normal flu. was able to prove that this was a load of baloney & that women were able to cope with flu better due to us being females. shut him up for a bit

greedyforbabies · 29/03/2007 11:25

my cycles are 45 days so going by my LMP would give me a due date over 3 weeks early. i have always told the midwives when they ask the date of my lmp likely date of conception instead. typical pg is 266 days long from the day of conception. i reckon you are actuallu due about a week later than your dates, but i guess it doesn't really matter unless they try to induce you and you dont want to be induced.
