Positive actim partus test 24 weeks

Hi all -

Just wanted to ask if anybody has had the same or similar experiences.

Was admitted to hospital Wednesday night with abdominal pain, after assessment and a positive actim partus swab in MAU, was given 2 x dexamethasone injections 12 hours apart and monitored for over 24 hours. Discharged last night, no more pain other than feeling a bit uncomfortable.

Cervix closed and long and the doctor was surprised my swab came back as positive, wasn't ever mentioned to me that I was actually contracting.

Just wanted to know of any positive stories out there.

Thanks. Sad

Hi Hun didn't want to read and run. I've never had a positive actim partus test. I was in a week ago having contractions but mine was negative.

However my friend did at 28 weeks and carried on to have her baby 1 day after her due date. I don't think it's a definite that you will go into early labour but it's a risk...

Are they going to check you again at any point? I know they like to monitor for only 24 hours after if you've had a positive on one of those tests. The injections they've given you will help baby if you do go into labour

I had a positive test at 32 weeks. Had the steroid injections, monitored for 24 hours and was discharged as pains had pretty much stopped. Spent the next couple of weeks in a panic, convinced baby was coming shortly. I actually ended up having her at around 36 weeks.
The doctors told me that if the test is negative the baby definitely won't come in the next couple of weeks. The positive test indicates baby may arrive shortly, but the test is affected by lots of other factors including whether you have had any sexual activity in the last 72 hours.
Try not to worry (easier said than done!) My daughter stayed put until pretty much full term.

Thank you so much for your replies ladies.

They didn't say anything about any further monitoring, just to go back if I had more pain and painkillers weren't cutting it. Sad

I've got a midwife appt Thursday so hoping she'll be able to shed a lot more light on it then.

It's so bloody worrying, just hoping she stays where she's safe, happy and growing for a good while longer yet.

Thank you again.

I had a positive test at 27+5. Was monitored weekly until 33 weeks. I'm now 40+4 and still waiting for baby to arrive!

Thank you @NinaMarieP

So nice to hear some positive stories!

Hope all goes well for you Smile

@jmscp2015 Wondering if you went into early labor ? I am 29 weeks and tested positive twice with Actim Partum. Having lots of Braxton hicks and cramping .

jmscp · 08/12/2021 08:53

Hi @thetruthisoutthere89

I didn't! She stayed put and eventually had to be dragged out at 40+12! Hmm

She's now 4 and sitting next to me on the bed chattering away, hope all goes well for you.

Apparently false positives are super common, so try not to worry too much and stay positive sending Thanks

Hi OP! I’ve had a fair bit of experience with these tests and previous posters are right that a positive result doesn’t really mean much. In fact, I’ve had 4 of these tests done and 3 came back positive, and I didn’t go into labour within 2 weeks after any of them.

It detects whether a hormone has been released that is necessary for labour to start, but it’s also released for lots of other reasons. So a positive result could be for any of those reasons (having had sex recently, a cervical exam, lots of braxton hicks which can cause some disruption but won’t actually dilate the cervix) etc etc.

The reason the test is done is because if it’s negative, it’s very likely to be accurate. So it is useful to be able to reassure parents and providers that labour definitely is not imminent, but not much use the other way around if that makes sense!
