Propess Pessary Induction Stories

Does anyone have any stories to share with me?

I was induced at 3pm today and apart from a couple of twinges, I've had nothing which I was expecting. Been for a long walk and currently using a birthing ball to bounce around and get things moving. Just wondered how long it takes most people? I know this is a 24 hour induction so I won't be checked again until tomorrow afternoon unless having strong contractions and I'm aware I might need something else tomorrow if this doesn't work.

When were you induced, was the propess a success and how long did it take from induction to birth?

Hi @Meowstro

How exciting you'll soon be meeting your baby. I know it's a long process but it'll go fast!

I was induced back in October. However I was given a sweep and gel. So slightly different. I went in at 8am Frida morning and they got me started pretty much straight away. Another sweep at 7pm (2cm dilated). Contracts started at 8pm (Friday evening) by 12am I was in agony. They didn't believe me and I had to pretty much beg them to check me. I was 7cm dilated and rushed down to delivery. My son was born 7.16am on the Saturday morning. So nearly 24 hours.

I hope it's as quick for you! Let us know how you get on. All the best for a quick and safe delivery x

Been induced with Propess twice now - similar both times...nothing really until about 12 hours in then felt a few twinges followed by increasing contractions (although nothing painful) until 24 hours when I was checked and got to 2cm with both without much drama and Propess was removed. Contractions pretty much stopped instantly then - 1st time my waters went about an hour after Propess was removed (midwife did a sweep at same time). 2nd time, had ARM as they didn't go themselves. Despite this, it still wasn't enough to kick things off properly either time and was subsequently put on the drip - which was intense but relatively quick and I managed on gas and air.

The time between induction and birth isn't a great indicator for me....both times the delivery rooms were rammed and so I had to wait 48 hours between removal of propess and getting into the labour suite! Fortunately the contractions had stopped and the midwives assured me that my 2cm dilation wouldn't reverse itself while I was waiting! Time from drip to active labour was about 3 hours and then about 1.5 hours of the sore stuff to birth.

It was quite a prolonged process but the second time I was prepared for it and it followed almost exactly the same timeline.

Good luck OP! Hopefully you will have a nice quick one!

I was induced with propess for my second child. Had the pessary at 2pm, walked and walked and bounced and went up and down 10 flights of stairs. Then as was only having mild twinges they sent my husband home at 9.15pm and I lay down in bed for a read. Waters suddenly went, by the time I'd got changed/cleaned up had contractions strong enough for them to call my husband to turn the car round! Then baby born at about 10.45pm, so once it started it was quick! I know it can be slow for some so try not to get hopes up but if you are getting twinges then hopefully something is happening. Good luck!

DS is now 17m old but I was given first propess at 5pm Thursday, second at 8pm Friday, gel at 10pm Saturday and an emergency c section at 6.30pm on sunday.

Turns out I'm one of those people unaffected by the chemicals they use to induce.

Not saying it will happen to you but be aware it's a possibility. I was woefully naive!

Meowstro · 31/07/2017 19:05

Interesting reading some of these stories. I'm not expecting much, I have a stubborn one here and know baby will hang on in there for as long as possible although I'm 38 weeks so not overdue or anything. They tried to do a sweep but was told my cervix is high up and although it was soft it wasn't ready. Just don't want DH to have to leave then turn the car around either so he's wondering whether it's better to stay local.

I had the pessary and definitely worked quickly for me think they put it in around 10/11 pm and a few hours later I started feeling very uncomfortable - couldn't sit down or still (it was my first so I didn't know that this uncomfortable feeling was leading to contractions) then a little while later I was 3cm and having contractions ... baby born 5pm next day!! Safe to say pessary worked very quickly for me Hmm

pinkrosexxoxxx · 31/07/2017 19:13

Mind u im ot 100% sure of time between pessary and contractions starting and then midwife breaking my waters lol but my baby was born 5pm next day lol Grin

yolorolo · 31/07/2017 19:37

I had the propess two weeks ago and it did nothing in the contraction sense, it did leave me 3cms dilated I was then rested overnight before I was given a gel pessary for six hours that did nothing not even a twinge. I then had ctg monitoring for 4 hours as baby was showing signs of stress. Within the hour I was taken to Labour ward and had my waters broken and the syntocin drip. The drip went in at 8pm baby arrived 45minutes later after 12 contractions and one push. Midwives said for some the propess works quick others nothing. Having had 2 previous precipitous labours I presumed it would be quick but it wasn't for me with propess. Fingers crossed it is working or already has, Good Luck.

Meowstro · 31/07/2017 21:42

So it has started working, not regular contractions yet but I'm having them so it's all starting. My plug went but unfortunately, it took the pessary with it 🙈

Waiting for a second one now.

Good luck OP! Keep us posted!

CatRash · 01/08/2017 10:10

Hope the induction's going well. I was induced at 38+1 due to pre-eclampsia. I had the propess and it got me to 1cm after several hours of quite strong contractions. However I lost it along with my plug and didn't realise so didn't get the full 24 hours.

I then had a stretch and sweep and the gel pessary inserted. This led to much stronger regular contractions but still only got me to 2cm.

Then they broke my waters which started horrendous back to back contractions where I was vomiting every other contraction. That was nice! This was about 7am.

After about 5 hours I had an epidural and the hormone drip. By around 10pm I was fully dilated and spent the next two hours pushing to no avail. I vomited a lot during pushing too as the epidural wore off.

Eventually my poppet-frog was delivered by forceps at 1am.

I had the propess inserted 11:30am on Friday and LO was delivered 1am on the Monday.

Helbelle75 · 01/08/2017 10:15

You probably don't want to hear mine. I had the first one on the Tuesday, nothing happened. Had to wait 24 hours to have a second. My waters broke on the Friday night. Nothing happened. Induction drip the following morning. 12 bkpours of contractions but nothing happened. Ended up having an emergency caesarian, which was actually rather nice.
Good luck, hope things happen for you soon.

BringMeTea123 · 01/08/2017 10:28

Sounds like things are moving for you! Good luck. Hope everything goes ok x

arbrighton · 01/08/2017 14:34

24hr with propess just softened my cervix enough to allow my waters to be broken, with difficulty. That started things but didn't progress that well so drip too but not horrific,, managed on g&a plus half a dose of diamophine.
Induced 38+2 due to large size, he arrived 38+4. Now 5 weeks. Just about over episiotomy and pph now, 5 weeks on

Piffpaffpoff · 01/08/2017 15:17

Both times it was a 4pm start.

First time I started getting period type pains atriums 4am, getting stronger til I would call them proper contractions by about 8am. Waters artificially broken about 9, into pushing at 5 pm, baby born 6.15. So, about 14hrs from first pain to baby.

Second time, period type pains about 4am again, full on contractions by about 5.30am, pushing at 7 am, 3 pushes later baby out at 7.12am. So just over 3hrs from first twinges this time.

Both very different but totally tolerable. Although the second time was kind of like being hit by a bus, it happened so fast and I had psyched myself up for another day-long experience! But onxeid got over the shock I was delighted at it being over so fast!

Meowstro · 01/08/2017 16:36

Lost my second pessary today by simply sitting on the loo. The contractions have come thick and fast, which they didn't expect so haven't put me on anything else. They only acknowledged they were contractions from the CTG, with them being less than 2 minutes apart they agreed to give me g&a. By that point I was already vomiting from the pain so had to be put on a drip for fluids. I'm only 1cm dilated, my waters haven't broken either. Think they are planning on breaking my waters with my next examination if they can. I can see this going on a while!

Im wondering ladies, what did you find the worst part of labour, early labour or the later stages of pushing?

OP posts:
BringMeTea123 · 01/08/2017 16:57

I found the worst part for me was the middle bit between contractions started just before pushing! I was getting so tired had no pain relief (didn't like the gas and air) and I lost all control and was screaming at every contraction. Once I had the episiotomy (just before they used the forceps) I found it much easier and got myself together and pushed. I felt much more in control while pushing as I was pushing with the contractions.

It's very exciting. Sounds like your doing really well! Just hang in there. Baby will soon be in your arms! Flowers

Spogget · 01/08/2017 21:37

How are you doing, Meowstro?

I'm 12 hours in to a propess induction and curious about others experiences.
I have awful back ache but nothing seems to be happening yet.

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 01/08/2017 21:41

I had this with my first baby. Got one then got sent home it fell out so I had to go back into hospital to get another pessory, that was at 10pn then my labour started at 1am

user1471443813 · 01/08/2017 21:50

I had one put in at about 2230 on a Sunday. About 10 hrs later I got a sore leg. No contractions. No abdominal pain. No cramping.... Got checked at 2230 on the Monday (24 hrs later). Nothing. They left it in another 8 hrs..... the leg pain wore off.

Went off to labour ward on the Wednesday (took me that long to get a bed there) Had waters broken. No contractions.

Then I had the IV induction (with an epidural) - got to 10 cm with barely any contractions (never had the 4 in 10 or anything like that)

Eventually had an emergency section as baby was stuck....

So yeah... the propess did nothing for me!

doleritedinosaur · 01/08/2017 21:56

Propess was put in 6pm, was woken at 2am for blood pressure & was contracting non stop without a break.
8am checked & 4cm, still no break.
9am up to labour ward.

1pm waters broken & 2:01pm baby out.

I've since had a natural delivery & the contractions were a lot different. They are far more intense in the induction.

Hope yours goes well.

Meowstro · 03/08/2017 10:58

Induction for me was not great, I'll have to say as I was in labour for so long but baby was delivered very quickly with no further medical assistance after I was 9cm dilated.

How are you, Spogget?

BaffledMummy · 03/08/2017 11:41

Congratulations meowstro hope you are enjoying lots of new born cuddles. By the time my second came round I just viewed induction as a necessary evil to get me to my end goal of a gorgeous new born in my arms. I would have loved a spontaneous Labour but sadly not to be and when I look back now, it doesn't seem so bad. Not enough to put me off doing it all again anyway (except I wont be as 2 is plenty enough for me!). Really great you didn't need further interventions though! Hopefully you will have a speedy recovery.

BringMeTea123 · 03/08/2017 17:16

Congratulations @Meowstro little boy or little girl? So happy baby is finally here for you!

hannahbanana2007 · 04/08/2017 19:27
