Scan / heartbeat

Hi all - first time pregnancy so not really sure what is and isn't normal! I had my first scan on Friday, dating and nuchal measurement. Two people afterwards asked me about hearing the heartbeat, but I didn't? Is that normal? I saw it on the screen but there was no sound. I have a seperate appointment at 16 weeks to listen to the heartbeat with the midwife. Does this sound normal? Should I have been able to hear it at the scan?

There was no volume at my 12 week scan either. But we were shown it beating away on the screen too. Not sure if it was down to the equipment they were using perhaps.
I have a midwife appt tomorrow but I'm only 15+3 so I'm assuming she won't listen for a heartbeat then either.

If you saw it beating on screen then it's just that the volume was down, nothing to worry about.

You never hear it at scans at my hospital, its just a visual. You hear it with you midwife after 16 weeks as before that it can be hard to locate.

Thank you for reassuring me Smile

Quite common not to hear the heartbeat at scans, I don't think I did when I was pregnant.

It depends on the MW weather she will listen in to the HB at 16 weeks (or any appointment), generally most MWs do but it's not actually NICE guidance to listen in at routine appointments so some MWs choose not to. Also it can sometimes be tricky to listen in at 16 weeks so some may not at that appointment for fear of worrying the woman.
