How much is healthy pregnancy weight gain?

Ok I'm 22 weeks pregnant and I couldn't help myself, I made the mistake of standing on the scales!!
I've put a whole stone on!!
Have I put too much on for what I should have gained by 22 weeks?

I'm not sure how much you're meant to put on which isn't too much or too less throughout pregnancy if that makes sense.

The weight of your baby plus 3-4lbs for the placenta and fluid.

Not 4 stone, which is what I gained with my first.

Teamkhaleesi · 30/07/2017 20:12

Please don't stress too much about weight gain! It's different for everyone and a stone sounds healthy if your bmi was in the normal range before pregnancy. My bmi is in the normal range and I put on just under 2 stone for first pregnancy and look on course to do the same this time. I was told by my midwife this is normal.

angelopal · 30/07/2017 20:14

Depends on your weight at the start. There are calculators that you can use for guidance. I put on 2 stone in each pregnancy. Was nearer the higher end of normal bmi at the start.

MummaThree · 30/07/2017 20:16

I'm 5"2 and I weighed 10stone pre pregnancy. I'm now 11st2
I'll have to calculate my BMI as I'm sure it was on the higher side?

25.6 was my pre-pregnancy BMI which is apparently just overweight. A few lbs lighter and I'd be in the 'green section'

The average is 2-3 stone but If you're eating healthily I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain as you can't stop it. Just focus on eating healthily and not following the eating for two myth; I went through a stage where every bad thing seemed to cause me to gain weight on my legs which I hated but couldn't control and it then evened out a bit a few weeks later.

Branleuse · 30/07/2017 20:28

Fuck knows. I gained about 6 stone with ds1 and lost it again within a year. Gained less with the other two, but I have a tendency to gain weight with even mild hormonal contraception too, and pregnancy I just balloon

SorrelSoup · 30/07/2017 20:29

It's supposed to be 2 stone. Not 4.5 stone.

Hedgehog80 · 30/07/2017 20:33

4 stone with each of mine and despite what anyone said to me I knew it wasn't too much.
I'm 5'10 and was 9 stone at the start of each pregnancy, had HG and didn't gain at first so out in most of it after 16-20 wks. 13 stone at end.
I didn't change my diet at all before during or after pregnancy although I could t drink tea whilst pg so that probably cut out 10 teaspoons of sugar a day.
By 3 months postpartum the weight had gone each time through breastfeeding and general day to day activity no actual exercise but I do walk everywhere as dont drive
By #3 if anyone criticised my weight gain I shrugged it off as knew it was just my body obviuslhndoing what it needed to !

MummaThree · 30/07/2017 20:35

I feel a little better now, but I'll be staying away from the scales from now on!!

I saw my weight and was frantically googling to see what was 'normal' weight gain for my gestation. I know I've put on fat in my thighs, hips, bum and face too (my bums actually completely disappeared actually lol)
I did read however online that you store extra fat when pregnant to help with the production of milk

Mummathree - we are pretty much identical re weight and pregnancy weight gain.

I'm your height and started at a bmi of 25.

I'm now 30 weeks and am 11 stone 8 lbs.

I feel okay about it all to be honest as I've had previous pregnancies and the one I felt healthiest with was where I ended up at about 12 stone 4 lbs at 41 weeks.

Also I'm looking after myself , eating the right foods , working full time and exercising when I have the energy.

Basically OP , I don't think you've got anything to worry about.

dippypanda · 30/07/2017 20:40

I've not been brave enough to weigh myself. But I did make the mistake of measuring the circumference of my belly!!! Confused definitely do not recommend doing that!!

Hedgehog80 · 30/07/2017 20:51

I honestly hunk my metabolism slows down as apart from going off tea in pregnancy my diet is thensame before during and after and the rest of the time my weight is steady

Hedgehog80 · 30/07/2017 20:51

Hunk-think

Emlorn · 30/07/2017 20:52

Ideally, from your starting bmi, total weight gain for a single pregnancy (i.e. Not twins or more!) would be 12kg, so just shy of 2 stone. But everyone, and every pregnancy is different: With DD I put on 3.5 stone, but was underweight to start with. With DS I was almost exactly the same bmi to start as you, and put on 2.5 stone.

fruityb · 30/07/2017 20:55

I put on two stone. I didn't eat much more than normal and as I got bigger I just couldn't eat - I'd feel full so quick! I had a 9lb 4 baby, my placenta was apparently enormous according to the midwife and the sheer amount of fluid I lost was ridiculous.

I don't think we're anywhere near the same at all weight wise - everyone is very different. I fit all pre baby stuff when Ds was three months (it fits a lot better now he's eleven months lol).

I do know my body shape has changed and that I still stand to lose a few. But I care far less now.

MummaThree · 30/07/2017 20:58

Thank you everyone for making me feel better

@ChickenBhuna it's also really nice knowing that there's someone who's the same kind of build as myself too and is enjoying a healthy pregnancy 😊
Panic definitely set in when I weighed myself, thanks to MN I feel reassured. But by the sound of it I have another stone to put on lol

I'm defo relying on breastfeeding to help lose the weight after birth

OP posts:
ChickenBhuna · 30/07/2017 21:14

Yep. And if you do gain another stone , you'll probably be around 11 stone once your baby is born and your uterus is back to normal. You can lose the remaining weight you wish to over two or three months with the pure busyness of looking after your little one! Smile

OhWifey · 30/07/2017 21:26

It's not just baby plus placenta and fluid as a PP suggested. We are designed to lay down fat too, for breastfeeding. As everyone else has said, so long as you're maintaining a healthy enough diet and continuing to exercise appropriately, try not to worry about the numbers.
