Pregnacare supplements - my advice? Stay clear

Hi all, just wanted to share my experience which seems to have already resonated with others in the past from what I've read but since I've stopped taking Pregnacare supplements a couple of days ago, I don't feel half as nauseaous anymore as I did when I took them. I started taking them from when I was around 5 1/2 weeks until 8 weeks exactly. I felt sick all day every day - and sure by now, some women feels less nauseaous anyway, howeveer at 8 / 9 weeks, the hormones are at their peak so really, I should be going through the worst at the minute. My doc advised me to take folic acid and vitamin D and that's all I'll stick to from now on! All the reports I've read about others stopping to take them and then not feeling sick anymore can't be a coincidence. Anyway, that's also my experience....

They made me feel awlful in my first pregnancy too, this time I just took boots own brand vitamin D and folic acid.

Bisquick · 26/07/2017 15:16

Same! My obgyn told me to stop pregnancare and just take the folic acid separately.

Creatureofthenight · 26/07/2017 15:18

Me too, made my nausea worse - I also switched to just VitD and folic acid.

sparechange · 26/07/2017 15:19

They do a liquid version which tastes slightly orange-y and doesn't cause the same nausea that the tablets do

Still worth taking the folic acid on top, and you can get vitamin D spray if you are feeling nauseous from taking tablets

TipBoov · 26/07/2017 15:27

That's good that you've found the cause your nausea.Did you always take them with meals?

I've never had a problem, I still take the bf ones 8 months pp.

leafv · 26/07/2017 15:40

When I took them I was sick within about 20 mins. In the end the only tablets I could stomach were the seven seas trying for a baby tablets. Luckily they had everything in that I really needed.

BentleyBelly · 26/07/2017 16:11

I've never had a problem with them....everyone is different.

SoftSheen · 26/07/2017 16:15

I took them throughout two pregnancies and subsequent breastfeeding... no problems at all.

PleaseStopRaining · 26/07/2017 16:18

It's the iron in them which lots of women don't need.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 26/07/2017 17:07

They actually seem to greatly reduce my nausea - every bad day I've had has been if I've forgotten to take them the night before.

BasedOnTrueEvents · 26/07/2017 17:09

I took them throughout both of my pregnancies and they were fine for me. They didn't suit you but that doesn't mean they are awful for everyone.

annlee3817 · 27/07/2017 00:03

I had low iron so thought they'd be ok, they made me feel horribly sick. Was so much happier when I stopped taking them, and like you I took folic acid with vitamin D until week 12 and then bought some sanatogen mum to be ones which were good too.

YellowLawn · 27/07/2017 00:11

I took them with my midnight evening snack. no problem then.

Bettybecks12 · 31/07/2017 16:27

Thanks all for your comments - someone asked if I took them with meals - yes after breakfast usually, sometimes lunch. I'm 9 weeks now and should be sick as a dog but nothing. Just a tiny bit of a funny feeling when I get hungry. Anyway, sure, I guess everyone is different but I still don't think it's a coincidence that those who felt awful on them didn't anymore once they stopped, it also seems to be a substantial number of women who felt that way. Pregnacare says that their supplements consist of stuff that's in the food we eat every day anyway - but then I understand the point of them even less, given you know you have a balanced diet.

One last comment from me - I spoke to a nutritionist today and she said Pregnacare is THE worst supplement you can take. It's full of synthetics and the way they source their products is also questionable. They don't seem to be much more than a well-oiled marketing machine - to sum it all up, that was the final straw for me. Never will I touch any of their products again.

I've never had any problem with them, but I take them in the evening (with my main meal). I think with most of the vitamins you just find what suits you.

Bettybecks12 · 01/08/2017 13:52

Sure, absolutely, it's what suits you but the fact that there doesn't seem to be much - if any - 'goodness' in Pregnacare products and your body can't process the synthetics is entirely off-putting...there will be better - food-based / organic products out there.

AccrualIntentions · 01/08/2017 13:54

I'm sure there are and they will be happy for you to pay through the nose for their organic wholesomeness.

Anatidae · 01/08/2017 13:54

There is no difference between a synthetic molecule of say, vitamin C and a naturally derived one.
Nutritionist is a title anyone can give themselves no industry is full of utter woo and bollocks. Synthetic /natural vitamins are the same compounds. Natural isn't always better. Arsenic is natural. As are belladonna, asbestos, and botulinum toxin.

What makes some people feel sick is the iron content, which can upset the stomach. So yes, taking any pregnancy multivitamin can do that.

It's vitally important that women planning to conceive or pregnant take adequate folic acid. Vitamin D is a good idea too. If you're able to eat a decent diet then there is no need for any other supplementation unless you have a specific clinical need.

If you do need extra iron, then a liquid supplement is generally considered gentler on the stomach.

Anatidae · 01/08/2017 13:56

your body can't process the synthetics

Can you explain what you mean by this? It's sounds woo.

Oly5 · 01/08/2017 13:57

The NHS only
Recommends vit D and folic acid. The rest can be got from a healthy diet. Fine if you want pregnacare and can afford it, but not everyone can. The mark up on them is massive and now they've started frightening women that the baby also needs a daily dose of omega 3 oils. They don't....

mummabubs · 01/08/2017 14:06

Exactly what @Oly5 said. Pregnacare play and profit on expectant mothers' anxieties that if they don't pay loads for pregnacare they aren't doing what's best for their baby. Each to their own but personally I'm an NHS employee who's been taking 49p folic acid and vit D tablets from the supermarket and at 31 weeks my bubba is developing just fine without all the 'extra' vits!
